Curious about green chromis

Is there anyone here that has kept a group of green chromis for 3- 4 years or longer without any losses due to aggression within the group? Seems this is typical behaviour from these fish if kept long enough.Only one or maybe two are all that would be left.

Please respond. Thanks

Disappearing until one seems to be the norm lately. However, I had a small group of three that lived together for a while. They have been in my buddies 120 gallon for 6-7 months with no issues.

Thanks for the feedback.

So these fish don't go past 18 months or so? Maybe they should not be sold as a schooling fish except for monster tanks. Should be sold and bought as sinlge fish.

A few people get them to behave long term in a group, but for most people they kill each other off. Sometimes quickly, sometimes after a year or two.

For some reason; many chromis are showing up with uernema and in generally rotten health lately, as well as the increased aggression. I haven't kept chromis in many years, when I did, they were healthy & peaceful little fish. I have no idea why. BTW, there are no SW fish that really "school" min home tanks like FW tetras do. (Except juvi marine catfish). Our tanks are just too small. Two chromis can be at opposite corners of a 500 gal tank and still in the same school. Look at the room a wild school of any fish has; hundreds or thousands of square feet.

I have heard they dwindle because there is no predatory threat around them. Therefore they start picking on the weakest one until the get to safe numbers. I started out with 25 in my 225 gallon tank in October 2010 and I'm down to 6 for the past year.

I have 11 in a 300 gallon tank. Purchased them all together and not one death. I believe their chances of survival is dependent on space, food and tank inhabitants. I have my rock work setup that the rocks cover most of the floor 96 x 30". When the fishes get scared they always have the option to dart down. I feed mysis and brine generously and the chromis takes care of most of the small scrap foods. I also have 9 or 10 tangs in the tank so they have to deal with other aggressive fishes other than themselves.

Any preference as to order added into a reef tank? I'm trying to figure out if they should be last or if it doesnt matter. Right now I have 5 Anthias, 5 pajama cardinals and 3 angels in a 180.

I've had two for the past couple of years. They were in my LFS as the only two chromis in a 180g tank for 2 years before I purchased them. They were in my 120g for little over a year, then moved to my 225g when I upgraded. I will not be adding more to throw off this balance, or possibly introduce aggression to the current residing chromis.

I'll stick with my two healthy, happy chromis instead of risking more unhappy chromis... Just my $0.02...

None of my other fish harrassed the chromis when they were added. I don't think they pose a threat to any of the others, so they were left alone...

Best of luck...

they'll compete for food with the anthias. as they like to be fed as often and will just wait in the water column for food. have a pair now for a month or so, every once in a while one will pick at the other but they seem to be growing at the same size and look better now than when i got them.. so far so good. i like them. always out in the open.
wouldnt think it would matter when you add them.
