Curious how to tell when it's time to pitch a filter sock?

I'm not sure, but I think if they fall apart then its time lol.
I clean mine real good and they've lasted a few months now.

Yeah, I've been rotating 5 socks over about 10 days for 6 months and 2 of them are starting to pill. So I'm not sure if I should pitch the 2 because their filtering capabilities have diminished or if it even matters.

I would like to hear from others that have some long term experience.

mine have been in service for two+ years. pilled and a little yellow stained from cleaning in the washer with bleach. i still use them and they work well.

With daily rotation, we get about six months out of our bags before holes/tears begin to appear. Cleaning procedure consists of rinse via pressure nozzle, wash cycle with bleach and wash cycle no bleach.

Ok, so basically when they start looking beat to hell. By the way John, did you guys get any TDS calibration fluid in?

And by the way, John's filter socks are 25 micron ..... the best in my opinion. You will find the 100 micron and 200 micron last a bit longer ..... but there is a reason for that!

Can felt socks be measured via a micron rating?

No expert here by any stretch, but pretty sure depending on the fiber type and diameter of the fibers, weave type, etc. that make up the "felt" aid in determining what micron size it is sold as. I also know by example that my advertised 100 micron filters are no where as near as dirty in one days use as my advertised 25 micron filters. I am sure one could debate what size particles we should and shouldn't be filtering as well, but beyond my skills :)

FWIW :)

I know I'm due for some new ones I cycle 10 of them 5 are about two years old and 5 are at least five years old.... Even the old ones don't look to bad I don't pressure wash them I just wash with bleach in the washer and second rinse and then wash another cycle only water with second rinse and let air dry....the skimmer still goes crazy for a minute but I take the skimmer cup off for a half an hour and it has stopped the problem of over flowing the cup....

Can felt socks be measured via a micron rating?

Yes. As mentioned earlier, various materials and weave styles will affect the spacing between individual fibers. Efficiency at removing a given particle size in a single pass determines the micron rating. A nominal rating is achieved at 80% efficiency while absolute is reserved for a capture rate of 99% in a single pass.
