curious sounds

It just started today. It sounds like someone is taking a key and tapping on the glass in a certain area of my tank. 2 to 5 clicks occur at a time, one right after the other. I was wondering if this might be a mantis. the other problem with this is the sounds are in a spot that has leftover food that the fish dont eat collecting....Am I going to have to vacuume every day and add a trap to catch this bugger?

yup sounds like a mantis, once you have him trapped see if anyone wants him most people are willing to take him off your hands

grrrr.....I have not been able to catch the sucker....I have taken out the rock and shot everything from tonic water to hot water in every hole I could find with no sucess...and it sounds like he is still in the same rock! I guess I will have to try to make a trap....he hasnt killed anything yet but I am getting worried about my 2 neon gobies that like to swim around that rock.

Do they typically find a rock/hole they like and stay near them or do the Mantis just roam around? I just found one in my tank but won't have chance to try and get it out until tomorrow.

Found it the same way as you wfuavenger, followed the clicking.

Supposedly they like to have a hole they call home....but mine is sneaky and has several homes that he likes to hide in, thus making it hard as hell to get the sucker.

Just bought a TRAP for my tank.. I have lost 4 watchman gobies in 1 month. COuld not figure out what the heck was going on. I noticed this gruesome looking thing with eye stalks off the front and he is about 1" long. VERY fast and has a body and legs like a centepede. He elueded me a while back but i thought nothing of it and all my other 4 fish were large. (clown,tang,damsel,angel). Well, to my dismay i lost the watchmen i added. I hope this small trap does the trick.

Our peppermint shrimp love this trap. The hermits do too. Neither one has ever triggered it but go in and grab the bait and leave. The mantis laughs at it. I'm sure he is as I hear this manic cackling after lights out every night!! It must be the mantis.

the adjustment screw will make the trap very sensitve.. Im crossing my fingers as that manits is very active after dark now that im looking (put in a moon light).

Yep, had it set so sensitive that I had to reset it three times as I gently placed it in the tank. I sure think the mantis sat on his rock, looking at the trap and watched the peppermint and hermit go in and laughed. I can still hear it in my head.

BTW, the trap is very light. You will need to weight it down if you have good flow in your tank. Either that or wedge it in somewhere. Just be sure that you did not spring the trap as you wedged it in.

you are right, the flow is moving it around from my 3 maxi jets on wave maker timer. I put a rock on it. I have added a "moon light" as well as i hope to see at night if he is moving about. It sounds cruel but i am relishing the day i catch him.. and flush him..

Your right.. and he is just doing what comes natural but i have issues with this guy eating 4 watchman gobies, and recently a clown gobie. It took awhile before i even saw him and realized that he was the perpetrator. I still have it in for him. SOrry..
