Custom In-Wall 150 Project

I ended up doing a vinegar wipe and thorough rinse after my freshwater test. Then I pulled the garden hose in the window and sprayed the tank out nice and good.

It got rid of the nasty brown film that the freshwater left.
Though considering what my sediment filter pulls out, I guess it's no surprise:

Wow, that's some nasty stuff coming out of your water.

I'll try the vinegar and the blade for the tough spots, I never thought of using those.

On a side note, my RO unit blew again and spewed water out full force for over 4 hours while I was sleeping. fortunately, I have the unit in the sink--since I do not trust it. I woke up in a panic for some reason and went down to check it and saw it blowing all the water out of one of the fittings.

This Coralife RO Unit is the biggest POS I have ever seen. The small hoses keep blowing out of the fittings causing the water to stop flowing through the unit and spit out. I'm gonna duct tape all the hoses to the fittings and eventually get another unit.

It's running again now, but I'm at work and asked my wife to watch it all day. I hate doing that to her. There are so many posts on RC with people hanging their units to the wall, I wish I could do this, but this thing just cannot be trusted.

Sand Suggestions

I'm sending my wife to That Fish Place in Lancaster to get me some Reef Salt and Sand. Does anyone have any suggestions on the type of sand I should get?

I'm going to put about 1.5" to 2" of sand in there before I fill it, then get some "Live Sand" from somewhere to seed it--or at least try.

I used very fine crushed coral in my 55, but it always attracted the coraline and other stuff that changed the color.

Any ideas? I might just do CC again.

this is just my opinion buit I think that super fine sugar grain sand looks alot better then cc, that stuff is just not as attractive!

those would look fine in your tank and are both pretty nice but I think the type I am talking about is considered oolitic or oolite!

It's funny, I always had problems when I tried keeping a small freshwater tank. I had continual algae problems... Now I know why! :)

Wow, you sure don't have luck with that RO unit. If the hoses keep coming out of the push-fittings, you could always try buying new push fittings to replace those. Should be able to get 'em at Home Depot. Helk, the hose is so cheap you could replace it as well. You might even want to consider more premanent fittings that aren't push in; perhaps compression fittings..

Conda...thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you like the tank and everything is working out well.

IMO, with the flow you have, sugar size sand will cause problems. I would stick with the first link you posted and add some seed.

I went and got 4 bags of the CaribSea Reef Sand (the first link). Also, I grabbed 3 small bags of the Araglive sand of the same size or larger. This sand should avoid any sandstorms.

BTW, can you use vinegar to clean the inside of the tank? Won't that poison it?

Thanks

Sand Update

Sand is in! 120lbs of CaribSea Aragonite in the display and 40lbs of CaribSea Aragonite in the fuge. Once I get the RODI water in there I'll add the AragLive--40 more lbs to the display and 20 to the fuge. Should be plenty of sand, if not too much.

i've been watching this thread for a while and all i can say is great job way to keep at it as far as your r/o unit running and blowing hoses and or fittings why don't you put a mini ball valve at your water supply that way you can turn it off when you aren't making any water and you'll be able to sleep at night again

I cant waite to see this tank up and running! I have the same exact size and its still sitting on my office room floor! I have tried and tried to get my other half to give me the ok on an inwall setup but no luck, maybe your thread will help....lol, heres a pic of my 150! tell me what you would do as far as the plumbing goes!?!?

I do have a Y fitting on my sink that splits into the RO Unit and a hose (See pic below). I used to keep the unit on the floor next to the sink and let it fill containers while I was gone or sleeping. Since my flood, I moved the unit into the sink so when the hoses blow off, it sprays into the sink and not the floor. I hate this thing.

Wow, two closed loops! Five holes per loop?!?! :eek1:

And I thought I had some serious flow. That would be a plumbing nightmare for me, not to mention expensive to run. Would't even know where to start with that thing.

I guess I would just plumb one intake into a powerfull pump, then throw an 8-way on top and use 8 returns and close the two other returns and second intake with ball valves for later use. Actually, I'd use that second intake for a water change drain.

Why two closed loops? Why 5 holes on each loop?

Looking good, MAN YOU ARE PATIENT!!!! I would have been up for days or weeks trying to get that thing done! I cant wait to see it with some rock in it. I also have a 150 (48lx24wx30h), its not as technical as your just two overflows and two returns with some powerheads but its my first reef tank so the next one I will have a better understanding of what I want. I was actually thinking of having Marc make me a larger sump for my tank. Well charge on we'll be watching!

That would be money well spent. Throw up some pics of your tank.

BTW, here is a pic of my tank with the sand in it. I did't put the live sand in yet, this is just the regular sand. It looks just like a beach:

well I was thinking of doing two darts on om 4 ways and just t-ing of one of the outputs on each side so all five returns would be used, but I dont know for sure if I will be doing that now that you made a great suggestion! having a two inch drain for water changes would make them so easy! I may just do that.....can you take more pics of your plumbing when you get a chance so I can see maybe in sequence from the overflow to the returns! thanks in advance

edit:
nevermind I went back to page 8 and found the good stuff!!!!
