Cute "Pet" Fish

Hi All,

My better half is craving a "pet" fish. Something that has personality and looks "cute". An "aqua poodle" as such.

Any suggestions?

Tank size in the range of 120-180 gal.

Thanks

Matt

Triggerfish are supposed to be the most personable fish we can keep. Same with puffers, and in both of those fish there are many you can keep in a 180, and many you can't :)

I would say a puffer.. Because every trigger I have owned(including my pink tail I have now), turned insane.. Spitting water at me when he wants food (I find it comical, but most women probably wouldn't), drawing blood at times K not intentionally, but they eat hard, and their overall temperament can be very, very touchy.. And they are strong fish to boot..

Another vote for puffers. We like them so much that we have a Valentini in our reef tank and pygmy freshwater puffers in a nano tank.

A buck tooth dogface puffer; mine spits water at me, I hand feed him, and pet him when I cleaning, and he even lets me tickle his belly. They really are the puppy dogs of the aquarium. My triggers are also little puppy dogs, I've been raising them from an inch; but they are alot to handle. My orange shoulder tang even dances around and follows me around the tank, so I think many fish can potentially be "your" puppy dog.

If you want something unique to your part of the world a red tail trigger might do the trick. I have never had one, but I hear they have awesome personalities.

Nothing beats a pair of clownfish. And with good care they can last 30 years.

My flame hawkfish has lots of personality. I also had a copperband butterfly that was really personable.

I think live bait would be an issue, so frog fish is out. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Hawks, butterflies, etc. They don't seem to interact with owners so much.

So far, puffer is top of the list.

Longhorn Cowfish are one of my favorites when it comes to "cute". They also have great personalities. They are slow movers though and can have trouble competing for food if you have a bunch of larger aggressive fish. They may also pick on soft corals in some cases.

I agree with ThRoewer. If you are up to it, Nemo, his father, and their house anemone is best. Everybody get hook on Nemo and Anemone.

Hawkfish and rabbitfish both spend a lot of time watching the world outside the tank.

For sure. My LFS had a Flame Hawk that would perch in your hand waiting to be fed, they currently have regular Yellow Foxface in their frag system that follows you around the tank begging to be petted.

Mine would also be my longhorn cowfish. He follows me around the room, eats out a f my hand, and loves to spit water at me. It's my wife's favorite fish including all of my fish in my 300g mixed reef. I Have mine in another tank with other similar fish so that I don't have to worry about him eating.

Can a Flame Hawk live with two clownfishes in a 40g?
