With over 113 active members on our local forum it is now time to bring to close this chapter in CVRC history as we facilitate the move to our official forum
It is becoming confusing to some having two forums so we will be closing down this forum shortly leaving only the local forum. We ask that you suport and join us in this decision and help us continue to grow this group into its next phase.

We hope to see you all there soon.

Thank, you
Ron

Per request of many members, this forum will continue under the name "Appalachian Reef Society" BrianD, Staff, RC

ya, i agree its confusing.. thats why i dont go to the other one.

i guess i will see some of you on the nkra (rc) forum then.

If anyone has a thread on this forum that they would like to salvage let the moderators know before this gets shut down. I been working on my build thread for some time now and I don't want to see it end.

Do what you like, but if it wasn't for RC, I wouldn't have found the CVRC. There are lots of people besides myself that channel their way through the RC threads to find the CVRC. I, personally, like this forum. But I hope it works out with the other site. Other clubs leave their RC chapter with a link to their local website as well for this reason, to get new members.

Thank you Jason. You've stated what I know but was afraid to say. We've acquired many new members from them randomly searching RC for local reefers.
I've been trying all day to figure out why asking RC to close this forum is a good idea. You're the perfect example of how a presence here will continue to drive our membership base. Like you say most clubs that have a large active "home" forum also maintain a presence here. Not to mention if it wasn't for RC there wouldn't be a CVRC. I don't understand how leaving this forum open impacts the CVRC forum since several of us have no problem posting on both.

Unfortunately that's not possible as far as I know but I may be wrong. From what I've seen if this forum is "closed" it would lock all our threads they should be archived but we can't update them anymore.
Just in case you might want to post a link to your build on the the NKRA forum here.

Yeah it's good to know we have another place to go. Guess we'll need to fire it up again. :D

I thought this was a good thing and having a Web site for the CVRC is also but as compared to the resources available at RC, there is no comparison.

Surprised a "Council" would vote such a way, hate to see it go.

There has been a conscious effort by the leaders of the CVRC to move onto the local forum for awhile now. So this announcement shouldn't be a shock to anyone that has been around while. I believe I know why they desire the move but that doesn't really matter at this point. The club president has spoken and it sounds like the RC moderators will honor this request.

I'd rather continue posting on RC in some fashion. However, I currently find myself without a 'home'. One option will be joining a group from the surrounding areas such as NKRA or CORA. The other option I keep pondering is whether there would be enough interest to start a new RC forum for the area. I certainly would post in it, but would anyone else be interested?

I am really disappointed to see this forum go away. I would have never met the friends I have in the Nitro, Huntington, Charleston, and other surrounding areas. I got into this hobby by a fluke!

Someone was giving me a tank full of saltwater fish for free. That was a turning point in my life....we all know there is nothing free in this world. I am thankful I met this stranger who got me hooked on reefing. She had fish only and non-reef fish. She gave me just enoughj rope to hang myself in the addictive money pit that I love so much!
What I am trying to say is I was turned on to this hobby by a acquaintance that had been doing this hobby for years. The lady that had the fish for free had been doing this hobby for years and they got connected through the bulleting board ad.

Both of those people never heard of a reef club let alone a local club in WV. Charleston is as local as it gets since there are no other reef clubs in WV to my knowledge. IF there is please let me know! The Parkersburg, Marietta OH, and Williamstown area do not have the gift of JoMar's and the endless supplies Barry stocks.

I admit I have not posted lately but it doesn't mean I am not reading the forum and checking in once in a while to see what is going on. I don't see a bunch of traffic on this forum but the other forum seems to have less action. I am not being critical of anyone, Please don't take any offense to words and misinturpt that I am trying to undermine anyone particluar person or the club. My opinion is just another opinion just like everyone else one of those other things we refer to. That being said, I see no way to generate new blood into the goup if they can not find a website. I found your shop by a fluke! I had a Doctor appt. in Charleston in 2006. We decided we wanted to see if there were any local pet stores in Charleston so we could buy something new for our fish only tank. I had no clue what I was getting into once I made it to Barry's. There was a business card on the front desk and a couple people mentioned the reef club. If I had not physically walked into the store and met Barry, Mary and Ron I would not have known about the reefing club. We assume others are resourceful and know about this hobby therefore they will come and join us. It is still amazing to me how many people do not have a clue about our hobby. I can explain what I do but they don't get it most of the time. Once I show people pictures of my tanks it starts to sink in. I have set up several people just to have a couple locals in my area to play with. It is hard to find someone that does this hobby and is within a reasonable driving distance. Right now I am setting up 3 different people with softy corals hoping to twek their interest so they will enjoy the hobby and stay with it.

Sadly, it sounds as though it is a done deal to close this site but I really think it will hinder new comers. How do you expect to draw people in if they don't know the forum exists. Look at how people in RC can look for locals in their area to goody off with or exchange thoughts. I am not clear on how people are to find the "local" site. thanks for listening!

I'm not so sure the NKRA was an appropriate group, since there is already the LMAS and the KRS in that immediate area. Maybe we can have RC mods to revise it to EKRA for East Ky Reef Assoc. or even SWVRA so that we will have a place on RC to post if the CVRC RC thread is closed.

I'm not knocking the CVRC website guys, it's just that I am just perusing the RC threads much more often and it seems that everytime I visit the CVRC site there hasn't been any updates in a long time. It just seems like the RC thread is more popular to me, plus it attracts new members that funnel in from other locations. There are many like myself that are not local by any means but still consider myself a part of the club from afar. Even though I am 2 hours away it is still the closest reef club for me and many others. I would like to see the RC thread stay, all it would take is a PM from the prez to an RC mod to allow the forum to stay. It's never too late.

Jason it's already the Northeastern Kentucky Reef Association. ;)
Dwight started that forum in part for CVRC members in eastern Kentucky and the Tri-State area so we could trade locally, discuss local LFS offerings and participate in group buys that weren't organized so far away. Actually EKRA is probably a more appropriate name but he was going for a National Riffle Association theme...something about putting his old bumper stickers to good use.
The newest KRS is in the Lexington and I'm guessing LMAS is Louisville?

yes, I just think "eastern" would be more fitting. If "North" east is mentioned if steps into the KRS neck of the woods, which is Lexington and surrounding areas. Still very far from us easterners.

i for one , am knocking the 'other' site, i see it as simply an excess.

Bummer, I thought that the members appreciated me paying for the other site. I didn't realize that it was just an unnecessary excess. Good to know though, thanks.

Why?

Why?

Since my name has been mentioned (in a good way - thanks Amy!) I want to say a couple of things to set the record 100% straight! Although I don't participate anymore for many reasons (primarily because I've got way more obligations than time), I've made many valued friends here and will always wish the very best for the CVRC. Hopefully the group will thrive in the future.

In my opinion, if it were to occur, it will be a huge disappontment to see the RC CVRC board go away. If nothing else, hopefully the RC powers can block new threads/postings, but will not allow all of the good technical information here permanently disappear.

Regarding the NKRA. The NKRA RC board was established in March 2007 but unfortunately never seemed to go anywhere.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=480

The NKRA board was not intended to become an alternative venue for CVRC members. It was not actively promoted nor was anyone ever requested to change affiliation! It was established simply because the Ashland KY area had been lucky enough to land a great local reef store ran by a stand up guy (Bert's - Jim Wente). I'd personally hoped that this local availabilty of goodies would eventually grow into a separate small community of reef enthusiasts an hour WEST of the Charleston WV area.

Although anyone and everyone is welcome to join/participate, I'd like to make clear that the NKRA currently has no formal structure, officers, council, or anything of the sort. It is currently nothing more than an informal web presence on RC for reef enthusiasts to communicate with one another.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1075037

If the NKRA ever evolved to a more formal organization or true reef club like CORA (the Central Ohio Reef Assn), I'd personally insist annual elections where each and every member has the right to vote on all issues concerning the club was a basic founding consideration. :)

I dont really see why it makes a difference where the forum is located it just keeps the two fragmented. I get tired of creating and replying to two threads for the same topic just so I can post them on both forums. It does not mean people could not use the local forum and still use RC. I think it would be a good idea to leave the forum up as an archive with a link to the local forum. This way people could still find the local site but what is the need for two forums?

I doubt there is much 'need' for two forums when the active community is so small. With that in mind, even the largest of online communities can divide on a board enough to make it usable. It seems some people just prefer to make posts in this arena while others rather do so on the board not tied to Reef Central.

truth is I hardly ever find anything new here anymore and with time limited as it is. I like the fact that the CVRC site is getting alot of post lately.

If I have time to check on only one or the other it is always CVRC.

thanks Igotsalt. I am happy that I was able to help you and introduce you to our site here.

Thanks Bruce for all you have done for the CVRC and our local site. I wish our other site had some of the features of RC but at the same time if you check it regularly you can just look at the 25 most recent post and follow the link back to the whole thread.
I remember when I was learning to navigate this site. I spent more time getting nowhere than finding answers to my questions.

Hope to see every one on the CVRC site soon.

Is it for certain this forum will be closing? Any timelines set? If so, I hope to get my build thread moved to the General Reef Discussion forum.

You should be able to hit the "report this post to a moderator" on the first post of your thread. Then just explain what is going on and ask them to move it.
