Cyano bacteria

Ok, just curious here. I looking for opinions on different ways people get rid of a Cyano outbreak without using medication.

Lets here your ideas.....

i had a huge cyano problem when i added new rock. thing that worked best was more flow, less light time and less feeding or filter what you feed. if not, run GFO. if neither of those help, your last option would be that cyano remover chemcial stuff. it will get rid of it but not your source of your problem like extra nitrates/phosphates

I had cyano starting to show before I went on a 2 week vacation. I returned to a total crash. everything was covered in it, you could barely see in the tank. I lost 80% of my livestock.
I would not recommend letting it run its coarse.

+1, unless your tank is still cycling, get rid of it

i use a turkey baster or gravel vac to suck it up. it's some what time consuming but if you keep it in check before it gets bad you should be fine.

I'm getting lots of this, and My tank is 11 month.

No food, no lights for a couple days, and then a lot of siphoning has helped me in the past.

I don't know why people are opposed to something like Chemi-clean. I've used it with no ill effects. Just follow directions and do a large water change after treatment. Run a fresh batch of carbon or Chemipure and you're good to go.

I am not opposed to chemi clean at all. I just don't want to tun my system with marycian ( sp?) if I don't have to. I did turn my lights down, so now I am at about 5.5 or 6 hrs, instead of 8. I did just replace my bulbs this weekend as well. My cyano problem started before the bulb change though. And I don't feed the tank really. I have fed twice over the course of a few weeks.

I do need to replace my GFO in my reactor, as it is old and done. My water tested fine the other day. I have sucked it out with a baster, but it seems to only come back stronger. It is not really spreading, but it is not going away either.

Also, every snail I have put in dies, while the hermits are ok, along with the coral and fish doing just fine. Also my clam is doing ok. Why the death with the snails??????
