Had the tank up for about 8 weeks now. 40 gallon breeder
0 for ammonia and nitrites
10 for nitrates

still having cyano on the sand. it is occurring in high flow areas. I remove it each day

I know blooms are part of a new tank but how long do these things last.

i have 70 lbs of live rick and 40 lbs of sand

2 clowns
1 shrimp
2 emerald crabs
and a cleanup crew that consist of snails and hermits

also have a kenya and a small 25 head zoa both are doing well

They last 9.24312 weeks (solar weeks) not really, lol. sometimes they can go on for quite some time from what i have read the key imo is diligent maintenance and wc combined with good husbandry / controlled feeding and it will (or should) go away on its own.

Yea not uncommon. The old attage used to be fight it till your blue in the face and want to give up. Now a days there sno real reason to get sick of it, just get rid of it. Heres how
First practice good tank maagement: you know the drill keep everything clean and do moderate water changes weeeky. Your culprit is likely the sand, so keep rolling the stuff up and sucking it out with your water changes. I always use a very soft wide enough paintbrush to pile it up, makes it easier to vaccuum out with the water changes. make sure you are using exportation to lower Nitrates and Phospahates as best you can. Even if they test low you know you got them if you have cyano. Carbon increases, Purigen combinations and a phosphate remover usually with a reactor will get you there. Then once you are confident you have done everything to control them this way...Get some ChemiClean and finish the job. This stuff works and is safe to use. Be sure you use after removing the bulk of the visable stuff as dead cyano can spike ammonia traces. Just do a good vaccuuming first and turn off skimmer for a couple of days after treating. Follow the directions on the box. It is very easy. And by the way your hair will grow back if you have pulled it all out by then, LOL

Happy Reefing

I tried chemi clean for this and although it is not suppose to, it fried my montipora. Sounds like you could also go dark for 72 hrs on your tank. Cover it with a sheet, turn off the lights and keep the skimmer working. Some people say it will come back and it likely will, but less often and much less aggressive IME. Cheap and easy.

I don't know if I would ever use Chemi Clean again, but it sure worked for me. I also made sure I had good flow and a reasonable light schedule with regular water changes. In my experience, I believe the chemi clean hastened the clean up of the cyano.

My wife actually thought the cyano was pretty! Guess I should have kept it!

Red Slime Remover is the best product to remove this stuff! Chemi Clean dose not wipe the stuff out completely. Good look and happy reefing!

At 8 weeks, your tank is really new and will take some time to stabilize. Also, a little cyano isn't something to worry about as long as you don't allow it to take over. How do you do that?. With regular tank maintenance.

My tank has been set up for about 12 weeks. I had a bad cyno outbreak just last week and did not turn the lights on for 3 days and it has almost all cleared up. Just been running the moonlights a few hours a day. Don't mean it won't come back but it cleared it right up.

My tank has been set up for about a year and I still have some cyano here and there. Remove the big pieces manually and keep up with maintenance try and stay away from the chemical route

It's normal to get some in the beginning. I'm getting some here and there and I have new lights and good flow, no nitrates. It must be phosphates. Chemipure elite has a little gfo in it and I've been syphon a little sand here and there with RO water and less hours of light and its helping. Want GFO reactor.

I'm not sure if someone mentioned temperature or not, but with my tank... i see accelerated algae/cyano growth if my temperature reaches 80 degrees or more... you want to keep your temperature around 76-78 as much as possible

Go to my blog, blue number under my avatar, read the post called Algae: about midway down there's a discussion of this and the cure.
