Cyno or Dyno Algae problem !!! help needed

have 1 tunze 6105 for the tank... and return is 5000ltrs per hr pump onto the tank.. flow is not that awsome.. just keeps them going... that skimmer image is when the skimmer was initially set...not now..now doing wet skimming.. that skimmate is browinsh/green...

The fish should be fine without food for a few days. The tank likely has some source of live food. If the corals are showing problems at some point, I'd certainly stop feeding for a bit.

I think the problem could be my coral vitalizer, i never refrigerated it.. and it has been outside since i purchased... thats the only common factor between my previous burst of algae and current burst... and with temperatures here in india soaring to 40C i think it would have well got contaminated and might cause the problem... will know in another few days once this light off regime is over.. will slowly add one by one of the zeovit components and see what spurts it... will that be ok? or totally eliminate Zeo?

As far as the corals are concerned, i dont find them being affected by the "dancing threads with air bubbles on them"... anyways it has been 36 hrs now without light. .but i havent covered up the tank.. so there is some natural light onto the tank.. but very minimal...

is that ok? or should i cover that also up?

turned on the room lights to see if there are any dancing strands, and couldnt locate any...

+1 on the Skimmer. Is it pulling a lot out? I just upgraded my Skimmer to an atb and I cant believe how much more it has been pulling out.

My tank just got over dinos. I tried everything, lights out 3 days and shorter light cycles. Tried H202 also. Finally tried ultra algae-x[last resort] and no water changes. Treated tank every other night for 21 nights. Stopped all additives. So far tank looks better. Algae-x treatment completed 07/16, did a large water change and replaced charcoal and GFO. Started dosing macrobacter7 also.

1st - so you did two rounds of 3+1 day light offs? and then dozed magnesium?
since you still siphoned, again the dino's came back? and then went off in a week?

I had small dino issue that seemed to hang on forever. It seems like they occur after the tank becomes inhospitable for other pests like hair algae. A combination of things finally resolved the problem.

1. Upgraded skimmer pump so that a higher volume of water goes through the skimmer than goes through the display tank.
2. Added small GAC reactor that I run 24/7.
3. To reduce detritus build-up, redesigned fuge so that only clean water (skimmer output) goes through it and made it cheato only.
4. Started running filter sock and changing it daily until dinos disappeared. I now run a 100 micron filter sock once per week when I blast the rock with a small power head.

During the time I was performing these upgrades. I limited the halides and vacuumed the tank two or three times a week. I still haven't got back to a full photo period.

I think the dino's, and cyano for that matter, are limited by low dissolved or suspended organic levels in the water column. I did everything I could think of to reduce organics in hope of limiting the dinos. Unfortunately, it's a good news/bad news thing. The dinos have finally disappeared but it took a few months and I lost snails and a couple of corals.

After some power outages, I went through similar. I was reminded that frags ship fine and may be without light and much circulation for several days. i did a 3 day lights out with minimal stress. Cut feeding to minimum, water changes, syphoning, aggressive GAC and GFO and later as things began to improve, began vinegar dosing which has provided marked positive results. It takes persistence and some time, some 5 months in my case to get everything normalized. It takes so little to upset the tank environment and so long to fix it but so it goes. Just stick with a basic plan and be patient.

thanks john and marc for your inputs...
just wanted to know when you siphone the strings, do you put it through a filter sock and drain the water back into the tank, or just siphone out the water along with the dyno-strings...

because, if i siphone out the water, the water in sump level reduces and i need to topup water very quickly... so what i did was to use a filter sock in the sump, suck the dyno-strings from the main tank using a siphone tube and put that through the filter sock into the sump.. so the water level stays the same but the sucked-dyno-string get holded in the filter sock...

is this correct? or am i doing something wrong?

I would just ditch the water and replace it with fresh saltwater. You could try to filter the slime, but a lot of it might break up and pass through. I'm not sure how effective a reasonable filter could be.

Update :
started off the lights... 1st day (Tuesday) only Actinics. 2nd day - 40% Whites and 60% blues...so today is also the 3rd day with same power... thats the advantage of using LEDs i suppose!!!!...

Well, no sign of any fellas as of now.. but i noted this problem ...
I had doubts on my phospates, initially was measuring using Salifert and it showed Zero... no color change.. so i purchased the Hanna Colorimeter and tested and it showed 0.15ppm!!!! it has been 2 days since i measured... replaced my GFO and waiting to test again in a couple of days...so could that be a major problem - in the growth of the algae?

If the colorimeter measure is accurate, yes the PO4 could contribute to the problem.

Update :
lights are still at 40% CW and 60% Royal Blues...
No long threads so far.. but on the surface of the rocks there are bubbles... slowly starting to emerge - well are they Back?

Rohit : nope we dont as far as i know...

Your sand bed could be full of detirus. Use a gravel vac and clean the sand. worked for me. You would be surprised what can build up in there over a couple years!!!!!!!
