d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

I planned to run carbon, maybe gfo if need be, and potentially some pellets. Do you have any probs with the mag drive on the skimmer raising temps?

I never noticed an increase because it runs 24/7.
But my mag died so I'm now using an old dc waveline pump I had laying around.

How is the fuge going so far?
The chaeto doesn't seem to want to take off yet, but I am getting some growth on my dragon's breath macro. Nutrients are probably just too low yet. If I don't dose nitrate, my test kits won't register any.

But you're so smart I thought maybe you found a way to interface it.
I found Jeff at LifeReef thanks to your build. Stoked on the skimmer.

LOL! :D
GHL has had them for years. I got the controller in 2012 and they were available then. But it wasn't until recently that I finally got one.
It's nice to know your flow instead of trying to guesstimate.
The real benefit would be to use it to control things like return pump or skimmer or something based on changes in flow, or at the very least an alarm.

Jeff is great and I'm on my third LR skimmer now.
My first was too big for this tank so I had to trade it in for a smaller one and now with the new sump I just wanted it to match. lol
And figured I'd get the flange version this time in case I ever need to upgrade it in the future.

Ah, that makes me feel better. I do like how his skimmers can use any pumps though. I'll be moving overseas with my tank and want to set it up as bulletproof as possible.

Hellllll no. My tank is an Apex free tank. :D

It's GHL. ;)

Apex's customer service is sub par now. They will tell you pay this much and we will examine the part and it's not guaranteed if it's gonna be fixed. My thinking is hey I paid $700 for the unit at least support it and don't extract more money from me. [emoji15]

I'm leaning more towards GHL now.

Seem's like it's been one thing after another with this tank.
Major things I've posted here, minor things I haven't bothered with.
After a year now, I still don't feel like I could leave the tank for a long weekend.
And now I can show you what happens when your skimmer hose slightly detaches from the pump in the middle of the night. :angryfire:

The other day I was emptying the skimmer cup using the valve at the bottom. I usually tilt the skimmer slightly to make sure I drain as much as possible. This time there was suddenly a fountain of water spraying up out of the sump. Pulled the plug and investigated and found that the tube and clamp seemed loose at the pump side. I tightened the clamp (or so I thought) and got it running again.

This morning I wake up, walk out into the tank area and it's too quiet. The tank isn't running. Get close and step in a puddle of water. Crap. Open the doors and there is at least a gallon of water in the sump tray and water everywhere else in the stand. Walls, ceiling... and then I see dangling power adaptors. The water sprayed all over a standard APC surge protector (which was still on btw) and a few of the sockets were completely melted. Two power adaptors fell off, leaving their prongs inside the melted sockets. One of them powers my Profilux external "Touch" display, which is daisy chained before my water change station and ATO powerbar so that was down too. Both vortechs were plugged into this power strip but luckily the Ecotech battery backup was going, because the GFCI circuit that this power strip and the Powerbar that runs my system pump was tripped.

Got things mostly cleaned up before leaving for work. At lunch I bought a new surge protector.
This evening I finished cleaning up, installed the new surge protector and everything is plugged back in and running.
Except for one MP40 which is tripping the GFCI if I plug it in. The prongs on the plug are black so it seems it got damaged too.
The culprit was the hose between the pump and skimmer intake. The barb on the Waveline pump seems a bit lower profile and the hose was just a bit not tight enough, and apparently the clamp too. Luckily I had some silicone tubing that seems to be a hair tighter and it's softer so the clamps really seemed to clamp it down tight.
Fingers crossed.

Thankfully though... that is all that happened.
I have a new power adaptor on the way from GHL (kudos to them for jumping on this asap for me, including driving to the post office since they missed today's pickup), and I'll pick up a new power cable for the Vortech.
For now its running off the battery backup.
This could have been A LOT worse.

Dude, that blows. I know what you mean though. I feel like, compared to previous tanks, my current almost 2-y/o Reefer 250 has been cursed.

Damn.... That sucks!!! I just had my return pump go out on me today. Not sure why, but it killed my kole tang(maybe a ph swing). Everything else seems fine. I went ahead and aimed both power heads at the surface and the new return pump comes in tomorrow.

Wow that looks bad but I guess it could of been worse. I am going to go though my whole system this weekend just to double check for weak links.

Sorry Dennis! Sure glad it wasn't worse though. That could have been a much larger issue.

I'm really glad I was able to put all my electronics in a separate cabinet this time.

Damn, that is really crap luck [emoji35]! I have been delaying wire and power outlet cleanup on my tank but you really moved it up the priority lather for me!

I am so so sorry to see what happened to you. It might be hard to accept but there was a fair amount of good luck on your side with all of this.

Dennis, glad this resulted in minimal damage. How extensive was the damage to your home? Looking forward to seeing what kind of redundancy you build in.
