d2mini's Mangrove Tank!

The mud should have a lot of nutrients, and hopefully also some good fauna to manage the sandbed.

This looks great so far! But what on Earth is that brown thing in the corner???

LOL! That's a Cucumber! I have several in my display. Figured I'd toss one in here to help keep the top of the substrate clean. :)
He's from Tampa Bay off the coast of Florida, same region the Red Mangroves are from.

This is awesome! I love the look of this addition to the system. The cardinals look great in there! Planning on doing the same thing so will be interested in your success here!

A little update on Mangrove Hill.

First, I changed up the lighting.
I wanted to reduce the heat in the fish room since I have two other high powered light systems in there. Figured the mangrove tank was the best of the three to swap out. So I got rid of the CF fixture, which was too big for this tank anyway. I just happened to have it laying around. At our local frag show I put some raffle tickets in the box for the Radion XR15w and won. So bye-bye CF and hello LED. Figured it was worth a shot and we'll see how it does.

Second, I got some leaves sprouting on two of the four mangroves.
The two that are not sprouting have black tips, but the main shafts look fine, not wrinkled.
Are these two toast, or do I leave them be for now?
They are the two closest to the water so I think that causes a little struggle. I don't mind removing them but didn't want to do so prematurely.

Third, I lost one of the cardinals.
I had them for like a year before my tank rebuild, they made it through 3 months of temp holding with all other livestock, they made it back into this new tank after the rebuild, but the one came in looking a little tattered. After several weeks he gave up.
Been thinking of moving the other guy to my display and getting a mated pair from Live Aquaria for this tank. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Sorry guys, been busy! Been meaning to post an update.
I'm down to two strong trees.
It's slow going (in typical mangrove style) but here's where I'm at....

So I've trimmed once, as you can see, where they sprout into two branches.
I want to trim again because I want them to be pretty bushy.
Don't want to go much taller than they already are.
Where should I cut next???

Oh, and if you are not following my tank's build thread, I added some rock.
That's the new Walt Smith 2.1 Reef Rock that he's sending to Tampa Bay Saltwater to seed in the Tampa waters.
It's helping hold the mangroves steady but still couldn't keep the sand very high. haha Oh well.

Still have this guy in there too!

And...

Any tips as to where I should trim next?
There are those little leaves right at the base of the new branches.
Should I cut right above those, or should I cut above the next set of big leaves?

I would trim just above that middle set of leaves on each of the new branches. I've never actually trimmed mangroves but with most plants you need a lateral bud just below where you trim if you're trying to spur new growth (this is called back budding). If you're not sure what's a bud and what isn't, post a close up of where you want to trim and i'll try to help see if there's a bud.

It could be tricky though to get a nice shape just because of a lack of lateral buds

Ya, I'll probably do that and then start training these main branches to grow more down/out than straight up.
