Dang, I wish I had $2.5k sitting around

Guess I'm one of those guys that likes Bandits and other rare Angels and butterflies. When I started in this hobby about the most unique thing you would see in someone's tank would of been a multicolored angel or something from the Red Sea. Personally I think your everyday fish are boring, but that's me. Rare and expensive excite me

^^ exactly! We all have our own tastes and as long as you don't put yourself and your fish on the street go to town :P

I am a fish packrat too. I got 2 unknown wrasses super cheap from the LFS. One is a ruby head and a little big for my tank so he is living alone in my room in a QT. I just can't bring myself to bring him back :/

You're kidding, right?
That angel is stunning and unique in appearance among pygmies... what's not to love?:love1: its not just a rich mans multibar.

As for price; well thats a first world problem. But some expensive fish are gorgeous in their own right and would be even more popular, not less, if they were $200 not 20k.

Whatever makes you happy [emoji6]

It's all a matter of preference. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", as cliched as it is. I much prefer the look of a scopas tang vs a yellow tang, yet many people refer to scopas tangs as "the yellow tang's ugly cousin" etc. I don't care for the bandit, but I drool over clarions, same as I do healthy Red Sea regals and bluelines. It's all about what captivates you personally, it is *your* tank after all, so I see no purpose in calling someone out for how they enjoy their hobby.

The one expensive fish that I completely understand commanding a high price is the crosshatch trigger. Tough to look at that fish and not be impressed.

Some of the others....
95 out of 100 people would probably think a blueface angel ($80) is cooler than a bandit ($1,000), most would think a powder blue ($60) is prettier than a gem ($3,000). In a vacuum, not knowing anything about its rarity, it would probably be 50/50 between a peppermint ($20,000) and a nice flame angel ($45). Like that clarion that was on DD last week - wasn't it $4,000? Imagine seeing that and a red sea regal in the same tank - which would most everyday people choose?

Now would I trade every fish I own for a peppermint, or a gem, or a bandit? OF COURSE!

I get the fish that I like and am happy if they are common and cheap. I get my fish to be special by keeping them all in pairs or groups.

Though there are some fish I would really want and that have gone up to crazy prices - not necessary due to rarity but rather due to the fact that they come from places that are not on the major supply routs. Most of them are clownfish like latezonatus, chrysogaster, latifasciatus, ...

As for the clarion: if you see it in person it's an impressive fish. But it is also a subtropical fish that likes it cooler and one that to my knowledge you can't keep in pairs in a normal tank. I would take a pair of Red Sea regal angels over a clarion any day.

For me, a clarion is most beautiful as a juvenile. As an adult, less so; I raised one from a juvenile back in the day when they were not all that expensive. Sea of Cortez fish do best in cooler tanks. If I were to have my dream fish, it would be a Genicanthus Personatus but at this point in life, would be unwilling to pay to have the pleasure.

Hopefully, the captive breeding endeavor really takes off, and we see G. personatus more readily available and reasonably priced in the near future.

Ted would disagree with the Clarion pair statement. It's all about doing what make you happy, you are the one that enjoys it everyday
