Daniel's RSM 250 SPS tank

2 things:
Do you always dose exactly the same amount of both parts of b-ionic?
AF salt must be used within a day or so of mixing - it cannot be stored. That's from the mfg itself. You can store the mixed reef salt since it has no bacteria or probiotics.

I always dose equal amounts of the 2 parts.

I though that Bacterias plus Probiotic will survive a week if keep in tank conditions.

Mfg stands for Manufacturer Guide ?

I am thinking I will change my strategy : I will keep my RODI water heated and a small pump. In case I need salt water for an emergency I can disolver the AF in a few minutes. For the weekly WC I will follow the same strategy, Have that heated RODI transfer to the mixing tank and add the AF salt.

Today I heated the RODI in the mixed tank during the night, in the morning mixed and in the afternoon did the WC.

Thanks Matt for your suggestions! !

The question of storing mixed up Probiotic Salt was asked in the AF forum and they said no. The question was asked in regards to using Probiotic salt in a holding tank for an automated water change system. If I had to guess though, I would guess that it is a combination of the temp swings/power failures and maybe the alk swing added.

Dan, your problems could still be a reaction from last week's issues with power, alk and pro bio dosing..
I have seen that damage on montis in tanks where alk and nutrients were not stable.
There is a product made by Polyp lab that I use in a couple tanks. It is called One. It is both a buffer and cal additive all in one. It is mixed with acetic acid to keep the solution from binding. It must be added daily to maintain calc and alk.. Because of the acetic acid, it will also drop nutrients.. When used properly, it is very effective but if a few days are missed here and there, nutrients go up and calc/alk go down.. Anyways, I have had what you are experiencing happen in one of the tanks I take care of when the housekeeper forgot to add the One for a few days..
I think you can only do what you are doing... Keep things stable and wait..
Good luck! I hope it gets better!

What's the latest Daniel?

Hi Matt..... thank you for your interest. I was going to wait till next weekend to take some pictures an update. But let's write this from the hotel in Charlotte, NC.

Briefly.....

. .... due to the delay of AF in answering if I can keep the AF salt stored after mixing it, I went back to Reef Crystal and my way of managing my WC that fits my today's work life style.

..... Alk has been around 6.5 -7 dkh. I still need to find the sweet point for the dosers. When I left home it was stable at 7 for the last 2 days.

..... The purple acro of previous pictures is impoving. Every day is secreting less mucus. Body polyps are out, but the tip polyps not. Neither at night.

....... The acro that has the shape of an open hand going out of the side of the rock, is OK, but the tips polyp extension at night was significantly reduced.

.......the same for a blue Acro.

.....All the rest are like nothing have happened. Normal polyp extension at night.

I will post pictures this weekend. I owe you all that.

See the big Valley in the graph. That was the decay in Alk when I started to switch to AF probiotic salt. We all were happy because looks like corals were eating the, alk. So I started to increase the dosing. I went from 62 ml to 83 ml. ALK was increasing. Suddenly I had the 4 hours power outage. Temp dropped to 76 and at my return I found that corals were suffering and Alk was at 8.5 dkh. Then I started to reduce dosing up to 45 ml/day. It was stable at ~7.7 when I travel again. I came back after 3 days to find it around 6.5 to 7. I couldn't adjust the dosers without knowing what was going on. So increased the dosing this weekend and left it at 55 ml/day. I left it around 7- 7.5 dkh, as you can see in the last points of the graph.

If I find it lower at my return I will be happy because I will take it as a signal of recovery.

Feb 19 I arrived at midnight at home and measured Alk. It was at 6.5 dkh.

Increased the dosers 3 ml and next morning did the WC. The salt was at 9 dkh. At midfternoon the tank was at 7.5 but later stabilized again in 7 and in the following days to keep it at 7 I increased the dosing up to 55 ml.

I am not sure what to do now. Just wait my return this Wednesday night (midnight), measure and adjust or I increase tomorrow evening another ml, just in case, without any measurements.

I'd just try to not worry so much about Alk at 6.5...it won't hurt anything at that level and corals will grow just fine.

You are correct Matt.

I am worried about keeping it stable around a value nearby 7 dkh. In other words, if I leave home today and it is at 7 dkh. Return 3 days later and it is at 6.5 dkh I will be more than happy. Then just a small weekly adjustment to compensate coral growth will be needed.

Cheers
Daniel

Daniel, all I can say is good luck!!
I am in Cuba for a week and can only hope things stay stable for me.. I gave my co2 doser a little 1/4 turn to increase co2 slightly... I HOPE it's ok when I get home. My mom is feeding the same quantity of food as I do when I'm home..
Let us know how it things look tomorrow, when you get home...
I hope you aren't getting stuck in the snow storm.. Maybe you aren't getting it down there..

Wise words!

You are a good observer. It is a Mystery Wrasse.

Ok, thanks! Not quite the weird bug-eyed crazy looking purple fish I was hoping for, but still cool.

I'm also a big fan of Birdsnests but they don't seem to show up very often in the "popular" tanks. Good to see that somebody else appreciates them!

Words to live by, indeed!! :)

UPDATE:

First Bad news: This Acro, is struggling to survive. See damage section (White)

I will wait. The main body is like a big tree and is well encrusted. Can't take it out to frag without destroying all the landscape .

GOOD NEWS:

The rest of the tank looks fine and the montipora are recovering color.

My 1 shot of ACRO PORN ..... dedicated to Andrew !!!

Later more pictures........ now I have to feed the dogs .... LOL

Best
