danskim's 300g rimless starphire

Thanks :)
I shoot a Canon 5D. Most of the pictures I've taken were either with the 24-70mm f/2.8L or 35mm f/1.4L.

Very nice camera and lenses. I don't know squat really as I'm new to photography too. :o Do you mind me asking why Canon over say Nikon? Is it simply a personal preference thing? It seems to me that the Nikon users outnumber Canon and just about everyone else too.

Haha yeah. It's a little a. hoeksemai - not the one from Atlantis.
I'm actually curing a cool (at least I think so) rock structure that will go in that left area. Then I'll mount the frag there :)

I keep looking at the latest FTS with the aquascape, and I really love it. It's like a miniature representation of a reef, with all the different reef, rock structures. It's like the fish can swim from one reef to another. very cool!

Actually Canon has the larger share of both compact cameras and digital SLRs (I think over 50% in both). Most pros (wedding, sports, news) shoot Canon, and that's been true since the early 80s. At every major sporting event/news event/etc, you can see the ubiquitous red ring (for L designation) and white lenses too (but Sony started releasing white lenses now as well). The tide is turning not only for Nikon but also other manufacturers... there are SO many new choices for DSLRs these days... 2 years ago there were maybe 10 or so bodies. Now there are almost 30 bodies you can choose from (not including old models I mean). Actually I just read an article about how Canon and Nikon (#1 and #2) are losing market share to newer players like Sony.

Canon also offers more first-party lenses. This probably means most to people who are getting into photography because there's more selection and a broader range of prices. Of course Nikon has a good lens lineup too.

However, it is somewhat of a personal preference to an extent. Honestly, the body you have won't affect your photography drastically. For example, no one is going to notice a huge difference between similar lenses on similar bodies from different manufacturers.

You certainly know your stuff.

Funny, that sounds like an ad. You should look into marketing if ever considering a career change. :)

I have a few friends who are very much into photography. A couple have the D3 for recreational purposes only. I went on their advice and bought a decent body a couple years ago (Nikon D50) and bought a couple quality lenses (18-200mm VR and 70-300mm VR) to tide me over til I get a better idea of what I'm doing. Next and probably my last lens for awhile, will be a 10.5mm f/2.8G ED DX Fisheye lens for well, fishing. :D

Haha... fisheyes are fun. I considered getting one, but I'll probably hold off for a while.

I've shot my friend's D50, and it's nice. And of course the D3 is top notch. I'd like to handle one sometime, but that may be after I get a 1D mIII or 1Ds mIII :D

Definitely there are lots of good things about Nikon... tough, water resistant bodies and generally larger and more ergonomic grips. But the new D40 and D40x are just as plasticky as Canon's Rebel line (and I think they have an inconvenient menu system).

Just read through your thread, really nice build.

I like that you went all T5s - glad to see others going this route as I'm going to be using a Sfiligoi Stealth for my 238g, hoping it is on par (no pun intended) with the ATI.

Thanks mcliffy2. Are you going with an 8, 10 or 12 bulb fixture(s)?

I kind of regret not waiting for the 10x54w fixtures especially because my tank wasn't delivered until earlier this year. I had the ATI powermodules on preorder and got them in late September, and I was too impatient to wait a few more months for the 10x :(

But the good thing is that I have room to experiment with spotlights like invincible569 has done.

danskim - I'm going with the 12x54w Sfiligoi...I wish ATI had a 12x54, 10x54 just isn't enough for a 36" wide tank. I thought about doing the 12x80w, but figured since I have 4" eurobracing, the 4 ft. unit made more sense. I'm also thinking about some spotlights down the road...Eric (Flint n' Eric) has a couple setup on his new tank as well (www.glassbox-design.com). I'll be keeping an eye on your build to see how it turns out.

BTW, the photos look really nice. My dad and I had a darkroom years ago when I was in high school, and I sorta got out of photography for the last 10 years or so, but now my aquarium is starting to pull me back into it, bought a Pentax K10D which I really like a few months ago. My current tank is a 125 half circle and the curved glass wreaks havoc on my macro shots, so I'm looking forward to getting the new tank with nice straight starphire :)

I used a mix of Aragmax (.5-1.5mm), Reef Floor special (1-2mm), and ARM :) I wish I hadn't gotten any Aragmax.

Really?!?! I had ordered 600 lbs of aragmax from DFS and then cancelled it because I'm not ready yet. What's the issue with it?

Since I have relatively high flow, the sand is prone to sandstorms. Even if the fish pick up pellets off the sandbed, there's a puff of smoke. After time it won't be as bad, but it's still annoying.

I've heard good things about the new Pentax cameras. I like some of their lens offerings... a first-party 50-135mm f/2.8f! Makes a 75-202mm on their 1.5x crop :)

Good news! Last night I got up because I had to use the bathroom. But afterwards, haha... I remembered an article I read from reefkeeping magazine (I looked it up again - http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-06/sp/index.php). I used Joe Yaiullo's light trick in capturing the hawkfish! I just prodded it from behind into the net. It's amazing how docile and disoriented the fish can be. I figured they'd kind of come to within the few minutes it took me to find the fish first, but they were like that for at least 4 minutes... just enough time!
:) :) :)

He will be living in the frag tank, which is definitely enough room for the little guy. I put the two shrimp in, so I hope they'll set up a cleaning station soon :)

The Pentax is really nice, the new 14.4MP K20D they released looks awesome. My K10D can't compare to the full frame shots you are getting, but its a good place to start for me. After the tank goes up I can start thinking about an upgrade :)

Yeah, but a crop camera is better for macro shots because of pixel density. In a few more camera body generations, that won't be much of an issue, but it's been true for a few years now. Crop bodies don't have to worry as much about vignetting or barrel distortion either. :)

I'm looking forward to the seemingly never-coming update to the 5D. The 5D has legendary image quality, but it could definitely use some more modern bells and whistles.

Yeah, I'm glad I ran by that article again. The desjardini approached the shrimp several times to get cleaned! That was really cool, but it was not out in the open. Hopefully their cleaning station will be a little more visible in the future. Unfortunately, the desjardini is still not eating anything I've given :(

In other news, I got insulted in my local reef club forum because my aquascape doesn't look natural enough. I was compared to a wholesaler's holding tank, haha.

Did the guy post a pic of his JBJ nano with a wall of rocks so you could see what a real aquascape looks like ;)
