danskim's 300g rimless starphire

I have a 1/3 HP chiller that I've been trying to sell, but I may end up keeping it.

It can get to the upper 90s in the summer here in MD... and pretty humid. The tank is in the basement, and of course it's cooler than the rest of the house. I wish I would have measured the ambient temperature down there last year though. For now, I'm going to see what happens within the next half year :)

Hopefully I'll just need some fans at most.

Currently, I have set the temperature range for the tank at 77.9-79.1 to save on electricity costs for the heaters, and I'll slowly up that to maybe 81-82 max in the summertime.

Dan, your last tank was T5-only right? How big was that tank? How often did the chiller turn on? I'm hoping that I won't need a chiller, and can get away with fans.

Yes, it was T5 only and was a 150g with a 30g sump. The reason I ran into heat problems was because the tank was a semi room divider for the sun room and kitchen. Lots of sun is not good during an already hot summer :)

I'd say I only needed it for about late June - early September. During the hottest months, it'd be on for about 1-1.5 hours and then off for 2-3 hours during the day and probably not very long at night. But that's also because I let the tank have a little more than a 2 degree swing. Everything seemed to tolerate it though.

Dan, I showed your tank to my wife and she really likes the open look. She said "Well, that makes perfect sense! You pay all the money for fish and then you don't get to see them because they're hidden." She has a point!

Nick, here are a few pictures of the joints. As you can see, they aren't attractive. Neither are the ground edges. I think I mentioned earlier that I wish I would have gone with another builder, but it was too late. However, since I don't look at the tank up close most of the time, I'm still happy because it's sturdy, and the starphire panes are clear.

I don't think they look too bad. However I'm having a hard time seeing the silicon. Is it black? Did you trim it back quite a bit or was it only between the two pieces of class to begin with? If that makes any sense

Yeah, I requested black silicone. I didn't trim any of the silicone. It's not BAD, but it could be much better... especially when I have seen up close shots of some AGE and Elos tank. However, you will pay a big premium for that.

Yeah, GC actually quoted me today and it was much cheaper than I expected, a first for me in this hobby :). However, what worries me is that they're the only ones so far that have said for sure that they would build it to my current specs. Aquarium Obsessed won't exceed 60" in length on rimless tank using 3/4" Starfire. They say it won't last. AGE said they needed to think it over for a bit. I'm still waiting to here back from Elos and Miracles.

You mean for the width (48? inches) you want they won't build it longer than 60" in 3/4" rimless? Because they still quoted me fine on my dimensions.

No, the length, he said 60" was the limit because of deflection based on some sort of engineer designed calculator. He was of the opinion that many of these new rimless tanks are going to fail in the next few years. Originally, I asked for a 102" length and 48" width but was flexible on the height. He said he wouldn't build any rimless tank that long regardless of the height.

BTW,
How far from the rim of your tank does the rim of overflow sit? the glass part not the acrylic cover

Also, How much noise are your getting from the overflow with the Wavebox installed on the far end?

The overflow is about 1.5" below the top of the glass, but with the overflow cover, the water level is about 1" below.

I don't get any noise at all :) Only noise I hear is the skimmer sucking in air and the calcium reactor sucking in Co2.

That is strange about the quote. Maybe they changed their policy within the last few months. AGE and Miracles also quoted me fine for my dimensions in rimless also.

great to hear sailfin is eating, but once they are use to their surroundings will eat everything you throw at him. when i purchased my sailfin back in July had tons of ich due to outbreak and survive without any problems.

Danskim, are you keeping Nori in the tank? See if tying some to a rock will get his interest. BTW, Thanks for helping my friend out :)

Hey Dan,

BTW, be prepared, I'm going to bombard you with questions for the next year or so as the system I'm planning is eirly simular to yours :D

On that note, how do you like the Powermodules? Are they worth the extra $ over the Constellations, IYO? Do you feel the spread is enough for your dimensions?

Thanks for your help,

Yeah, if I had a canopy, I'd have definitely gone with a 4 x 250w LumenBright setup. What other fixtures or combinations are you considering?

Here is today's FTS with all bulbs firing.

I don't know if you could notice with the picture I took yesterday, but I took off the 6100 on the WavySea and just added it to the left side with another 6100. The ARM helped a lot, but after a few days, there was still sand blowing around... particularly when the ARM had moved just a little bit out of the way of the tiny sand. Maybe when the sand settles better I'll add it, but still there's plenty of good flow in the tank. I also had to paint another fitting black because I wasn't using the pvc tee with the Tunze anymore.

And no more fish trap!
Holy cow Danskim! I toltally missed that post and picture! Your tank is incredible buddy!
