danskim's 300g rimless starphire

Bjarne, here are the pictures as you requested. Hopefully this is what you meant:

I shot at 24mm with a full frame dslr, but I still couldn't capture everything. I lost a bit of the sides too because I had to rotate the canvas so the top and the water line were parallel to the borders. Haha... and don't mind the little fish trap. I'm trying to capture the hawkfish :(

Nick, here are a few pictures of the joints. As you can see, they aren't attractive. Neither are the ground edges. I think I mentioned earlier that I wish I would have gone with another builder, but it was too late. However, since I don't look at the tank up close most of the time, I'm still happy because it's sturdy, and the starphire panes are clear.

I ordered an acrylic camera box, so I'll be shooting lots of top down shots soon!

That is exactly what i meant! Thank you! Im very impressed with the simplicity in your rockwork it looks absolutely gorgeous.

Will try and replicate it when i remodel my tank this summer.

Did the guy post a pic of his JBJ nano with a wall of rocks so you could see what a real aquascape looks like ;)

Haha, no. I tried to find his thread or pictures, but he hasn't posted any anywhere. Weird, but he's been part of the club for a long time. I personally haven't seen his tank either, but he has a 500g system - 300g sps tank and a 100g something else.

Not sure what his problem is. If he was trying to point out something that I was doing wrong in an attempt to help me and not insult me on aesthetic/personal preference, then I would have understood.

Howre you liking your lights danskim? I keep wavering and cant make up my mind between the T5s and MH! If my tank would look like that, then the choice would be clear.

Im undecided on that. I would like to avoid a canopy if possible. But I would also like to avoid the hefty price tag those ATI T5 fixtures carry lol

Yeah, if I had a canopy, I'd have definitely gone with a 4 x 250w LumenBright setup. What other fixtures or combinations are you considering?

Here is today's FTS with all bulbs firing.

I don't know if you could notice with the picture I took yesterday, but I took off the 6100 on the WavySea and just added it to the left side with another 6100. The ARM helped a lot, but after a few days, there was still sand blowing around... particularly when the ARM had moved just a little bit out of the way of the tiny sand. Maybe when the sand settles better I'll add it, but still there's plenty of good flow in the tank. I also had to paint another fitting black because I wasn't using the pvc tee with the Tunze anymore.

And no more fish trap!

That looks awesome.

For T5s, I was considering using the Tek T5 8x54w fixture. Use 4 daylights, and 4 actinics of some variety. My tank is also way more shallow than yours it looks like, Im only 20" deep. The Teks are $529, your ATI is $1000 lol.

The Tek is a good fixture for a good price. That's what I used on my older tank, and it grew my corals really well. If that's what you get, make sure you get the acrylic splash shield as well. Actually, it'd probably be better to just get the acrylic sheet somewhere else like freckleface.com for cheaper.

And it'll really help to add ventilation to it. I used a cheap plastic fan, but I saw someone add some 40mm PC fans to the top like the ATIs.

I have a big sheet of 1/16 acrylic from when I broke an old window lol. So I shoul dbe ok. I just have a small 8" fan over the top of my tank. I may go ahead and make something neater in the future. But thats what'll work. I initially was going to go lumenarc and XM 10ks. But my budget isnt quite as large as I was hoping. So I gotta buy a used skimmer and choose those T5s I think. Because Im not going cheap on flow, there will be a TS24 in that tank lol.

Thanks for the input on your T5s.. and you can have your thread back now lol.

Hey Dan - Love the new FTS...I think all future FTS should have all bulbs fired ;)

Questions for ya:

1) what bulbs are you running, and in what order?
2) what do you have running for flow right now?

The bulb mixure is as follows in each fixture:
3 - ATI Blue plus
2 - ATI AquaBlue 12000K Special
1 - UVL AquaSun
1 - Sfiligoi Super Actinic 03
1 - GE 6500K

Well that's what it's supposed to be ;)
I accidentally put 2 of the GE 6500Ks in the left fixture and put another Blue Plus in its place in the right. That's why the right is bluer. I'll fix it one of these days...

For flow I have a 6200, 2 x 6100s, the 6212 wavebox, OR6500 return, and a SureFlow 1600 (can't see it behind the 6200 on the right).

My new 6201 will be here early next week I hope. That will replace one of the 6100s. So after all that I'll have about 17000+ gph or 56x+ not including the wavebox.

I like the color your bulbs give off better than mine. My bulbs are a little different:

2 - ATI Blue+
2 - ATI Aquablue
2 - UVL Superactinic
1 - UVL Aquasun
1 - GE 3000K

Are you using that combo of bulbs based on past experience, or was it a recommendation from GrimReefer?

Why'd you go GE 6500 over 3000?

I did ask TheGrimReefer for his opinion, but I used a similar combination previously. I think I had:

2 Giesemann Actinic+ (basically blue+ minus a lot of par :))
2 Giesemann Actinic
2 GE 6500K
2 Giesemann Aquablue

The two 6500Ks made it too yellow IMO, so I wanted a slightly bluer spectrum.

I'm not sure because I didn't consider the 3000K. Does that hit the red spectrum more?

Don't know! :p I ran halides on my last tank, and know nothing about T5's, so I bought what Grim recommended :D LOL

I was curious, so I looked it up at ReefGeek.

This is what they say about the 3000K:
Excellent for bringing out the yellows, oranges and reds in an aquarium.

And this is for the 6500K:
Good for bringing out the greens in an aquarium

Also it appears the 3000K has slightly more lumen output :)

It doesnt seem like theres much daylight or sunlight kelvin bulbs. But it looks great. I woulda thought you went 1/2 daylight, 1/2 some sort of actinics.

My Ideal set up (8 bulb):
(1) 3000k
(1) 6500k
(2) 10000k-12000k
(2) Pure actinic 03
(2) Actinic plus

It seems like itd have a bunch of growth, but still white. Unless I am totally off. My last cheap (current USA) Fixture had (2) daylight, (1) 460nm and (2) 420nm, and it was a nice crisp white. Maybe I am wrong though?

im pretty sure the sailfin will eat soon as those guys are hardy. great FTS, i probably missed it but do you need a chiller or have one already.

^ Same question as Bart. I'm not running a chiller right now, but summer is approaching. How warm does it get in the summer, Dan?
