darth maul chalice

This is the worst thread ever

Hi there,
I have to disagree with you. Seriously, with the crazy price tags on all these named fancy chalices, zoas and acans, I find it exhilerating to have the finder of a chalice willing to participate in the discussion. Additionally it is nice to see disproving of inaccurately named corals. Even moreso, it is refreshing to see someone who gives away frags rather than insists on major cash for a trophy piece. It was childish to ask the question of whether he felt selling frags was unethical. If that were the case, he wouldn't have given frags to at least one person who piped up (as he from time to time sells quality frags...) Perhaps there is a gentlemans agreement here? Regardless, what does it matter to you :-)

If I went to the Chevy dealership to buy my dream car (the 2010 Camaro) and plunked down 41K and they gave me the keys to anything else, be it a brand new Benz or 1986 Cutlass. I'd be furious. No matter how pretty it is. But it's not what was represented.

Anyway.....

No doubt! Sheeze  Was wondering what was up with all those nice this, and nice thats lately....

Ian is on the ball! :D

This thread hopefully will show EVERYONE how really common this is and how often it happens. This is just like Tubb's blue zoos, if anyone aquired any zoa that was blue it was automatically referred to as "Tubb's", remember that?? Alot of people still continue to label any coral that resembles a coined collector piece by the coined name, EVEN when it came from a fresh transhipment to their local fish store.

What kills me is that with a million Looney Toon, GI JOE, and all the comic book superheroes out there people are still moochin off other people's named stuff trying to ride any interest/hype till it's exhausted..Get a little creativity and get yer own names DUDES! :p

I'm not trying to fuel any fire here, but there has to be more than one colony of this coral in the wild. So are you guys trying to say that even if the corals match exactly to the one Tuberider has, that because the frag did'nt come from his colony that it can't be called a Darth Maul?

This is the problem I have with the name game, certainly you have to admit the chances of there being only one colony of this coral on the planet is slim to none.

Happens with virtually every coral. Seeing how many morphs and Darth Maul knockoffs should testify that tuberider didnt have the only morph of that chalice.

I mean, look at the cali tort? Someone named it that, but even though the exact same colony got split up into seperate regions; one party naming it the calitort name another calling it the ORA blue acro. Same DNA yet two names? What the F? Pretty darn commendable especially considering todays trends.. They named it once they started propagating and trading it. Even with more right to mooch off the same name they chose not to.

But ask yourself how could it be called Darth Maul if it didnt come directly through the chain from tuberider or reefready, the very people who coined it as such? Shouldnt anything else no matter how identical be called something else if it did not come from the originator of the name? I can call my Ford Explorer a Mazarati, doesnt make it so though...

lol good point. i've seen something picked up at the same place by 2 people and they named the piece they picked up differently.

but for the collectors that like to collect with lineage this is important.

You've missed my point. I'm not talking about an obviously different looking piece.

This is not to flame anyone, but if it is indeed the same coral, just from another colony, how does one become more valuable than the other just because someone named it? This is why I think lineage means nothing, but that is just my opinion.

Suppose a diver breaks the colony on the way to the holding facility. now you have two of the exact colonies right down to the DNA, one colony winds up in say, Fla and the other in Cali. The one in Cali gets bought and named by someone with a rep in the hobby, the other in Fla is bought by a "Nobody".

By your reasoning the Fla piece owned by the nobody has no right to use that name even if it comes from the same mother colony?

The other thing people are basing fakes on is appearance, well we all know the exact same corals can look different in different tanks due to the conditions they are kept.

Okay the car thing was a stretch, but no I do understand your point.

In regards to the DNA hypothetical, Im not stating anything really. When I brought it up it was actually a comment, giving props. Some parties in the past, have come to realize they purchased a split colony, and they did actually confer with each other and one dropped the one they named and went with the name from the other guy, and that's cool too. They worked out the details and came to a respectable decision.

My point is with out conferring, and just assuming by looks alone is not a respectable decision.

Dont get me wrong though, I see both sides of the fence and will be the first to tell you inherit problems with the name game ;) This, being one of them

In regards to more money from a Somebody vs., a Nobody.. Many reasons to list, but if the Nobody starts playing with the Somebody's he'll too have to start hikin up his prices as he'll have very little left. Supply and demand will always work it out no matter what neck of the woods.
