I recently picked up an EX-1. Love it. pulls goo, and looks to have a decent build quality. A local friend got the ex-3 and he loves his also. any other users?
 
EX-3 all the way! runs great on my 29g nano. about doubled my water volume ... but thats OK!

I have just got done testing out a EX1 I like it, It's a good little skimmer.
I am testing out a EX3 next. I ordered it today so i will have it in a month. LOL Thats the only thing that sucks about these skimmers is the wait.
Anywho if someone wants a 2 week old ex1 give me a pm. ;)
 
you could've had an EX-3 much sooner .. i just sold my other one(brand new) 3 days ago..... it was up in the FS section ... guy came by yesterday to pick it up.

now back to the DAS. Modded collection cup for external drain and getting ready to mesh it.

That is something I didn't think about on the EX-1. only way to find out is to do it. I will make sure to report back on that. I know my friend has enkamat on his ex-3 and it works good, but I can see that it might be a bit much on the ex-1.

Yeah it would push bubbles thru the neck.
The drain is easy, Just put it on the bottom of the cup. Its not big enough for a syphon break in there.

I have my ex-3 mesh-modded .. runs GREAT! i also took the air valves off ... running it FULL OPEN - with mesh mod on all 3 pumps.

I had to drill the collection cup, as it would be filled up within 24 hours.
 
could you reduce the water flow into the skimmer to quit making it overflow?
Plenty of peeps meshmod their euroreef cs6's & ASMs from what i understand..... just wondering.
 
i'm also wondering how you mesh modded your ex-1?

did you cut the pins off & replaced them with enkamat? i did not. My pumps still have the pins on the 'impeller' - just placed the enkamat over & through the pins, then ties fishing line through the holes int he backplate to secure it in 3 spots.
 
I can almost see how it could be. I have to reduce flow alot to keep it from overflowing as it is. More air might make it overflow without any flow at all. I will find out soon and let you know for sure

does your skimmers recirc output have a 45*, or 90* on it, or is it just a stright return port?

edit: on the inside of the body .. once it return back into the body.

Another thing you might want to try is lower the output of the skimmer.

Because no matter how low of flow, the water level only goes down so much. That would let you bring the water level to anywhere you want it.
