Thanks Kris... have you put many EX-3's on folks tanks? If so, were they noticably louder than the EX-1's or EX-2's.

I know it probably sounds like I'm wearing out the noise issue, but I'm just trying to get a handle on what to expect as far as noise long term and find out if there's anything I can do to quiet it down some. It'll be going under my stand, so I was looking for something fairly quiet.

I'll try to get the new mufflers on tonight and see what it does.

Is the noise you are hearing coming from the pump itself oor the air tubing making the sucking sound?

I ordered my DAS ex1 from Orca a couple Saturdays ago and it shipped directly from DAS that Monday and I received it that very week on Friday.

As for noise it is very quite the only noise I hear is from the air intake and it isnt to bad.

I think it's a combination of the air intakes and the air being chopped up in the pump and traveling through the PVC. The tank is in what use to be our formal dining room... :D But you can hear the skimmer running in surrounding rooms. I don't know, maybe it's just due to it being a 3 pump model. :hmm3:

i am thinking about getting one and joining the club. will go on my 75 sps tank. i need to get my sump setup first. then i can get rid of my turbofloater multi, that will be a good day. so this skimmer is just plug n play? how much adjusting has to be done?

When I put the ex2 on my tank one pump was perfect and the other was freakin loud.. Loud like Octopus pumps... So I started turning it on and off and one time I got lucky and the noise quit. I think the impeller would not seat right and I finally got it to. The noise is still a little louder than the other pump but it is way more tolerable. When the cooling fans are on you cant hear the skimmer. Hell you can not hear the overflow when they are on.

any recommendations for a feed pump for the ex-2 - will have approx 5 ft head - I know a lot of you gravity feed but that isn't a viable option for me at the moment

how do u get to the impellers on the pumps? i have the ex2. the guy i got it from mesh modded one of the pumps. u can see the difrence between the two. so i want to try taking the mesh off or replacing the impeller.

maxijet 1200 worked perfect for me. It has only a 2ft head in my setup so you might need something more powerful.

Feed pump ... I'm using a heavily throttled down HD-30. It was my last skimmers pump. Not a very good use of energy but all I have right now. I actually do have a spare MJ. I was thinking of dropping it right into the filter sock for my overflow drain lines. I use the large filter bags. It would be about a 4 ft head so I'm not sure I would get enough flow, I would have to measure the flow out of the skimmer with the MJ hooked up to see if I was getting an acceptable amount. I doubt it would be enough. I may just invest in the smallest external I can find that would work to put in place of the Blueline 30-HD. I dont need a 90 watt pump for a skimmer feed. I have a bulkhead in the sump just for a skimmer pump so I may as well use a small external which would add less heat than a submersible. The MJ's are effective little freakin aquarium heaters. I actually hate them as circulation pumps. I'm Probably better off not using one. Only think I use them for now is for circulating and pumping in my water change water.

I was wondering why mine was taking so long to make good skimmate, then I checked my flow coming out of the skimmer = 30gph. I have mine tee'd off the overflow, and I never tested the flow rate for some stupid reason. I got it up to 75gph (50g tank) the other night, and its cranking out the skim now. Very fine column of bubbles going up the neck. Also, I took the air valve off completely. When its off, the column of bubbles is very dense and bubbles are small. If I just put the valve on it with it fully open, the column of bubbles drops considerably and the size of them increases. I guess I will just run it fully open, seems to work!

how are you getting the flow rate so low while keeping the water level in the skimmer at the right level?

Well I ordered up the EX-1. I will be back (with pictures and questions) once it arrives. Thanks for the help all, I hope it works out well for me!

I dont know how grundig5 is doing it but that's what makes a gate valve (or an expansion coupler) on the output a nice thing to have. But you have to drop the height of the output T by 2 - 3 inches.

I dont know that the height can even change without a gate valve, right? Mine stays constant with the level of the output tee, no matter what the throughput. The level did not go up as I increased the flow through it. Its only been running a week, so its still very new.

No, the level will change with flow rate. It may take more than a change from 30 to 70 GPH to notice it though. But there was quite a bit of difference when I was experimenting with flow rates in the 100 to 200 GPH range before I added the gate valve and lowered the output T connector.

interesting...
I just checked it and turned the recirc pump off. I put it back to about 30gph and back up to 75 and the level did not change. Maybe needs a bit more like you said...

this is 2 days worth. on a month old 75g. the skimmers just starting to break in after a couple weeks.

How do you adjust the break level of the bubbles (wet vs. dry skimming)? Perhaps it will be obvious once I get it.
