The box was not damaged at all. It was packed in this grey instpak. It should have been secure but apparently it wasn't enough.

That sucks. I got same day response by email so I'm sure you will hear from them and they'll take care of it. All they have to do is ship with the pump un-attached and I bet the shipping success goes up 10 fold. It would be very difficult for UPS to damage the skimmer if the pump was un-attached. They should also maybe consider not attaching the return piping either from the output side of the gate valve. But that is probably rarely a problem. Every pic. of shipping damage I have seen and every story told is due to the pumps being attached.

Wow! Looks like that one took a pretty serious hit.
If the box shows no sign of damage, I doubt the shipper is making good on these. Seems like DAS has quite a few DOAs with these skimmers. I wonder how much that plays into setting the retail cost of the skimmer?

I used to have a little web-based biz where I sold and shipped cases of lubricants to customers. I was amazed at the amount of shipments that were damaged in transit. Didn't make any difference who the carrier was either. But if the box didn't show signs of distress, they would not even consider paying for replacement. It finally got to the point where I was spending so much on double packaging that I eventually gave it up. The items I sold were too competitively priced to carry on at that rate.

For people who had problems with the o-rings, did you have good luck with silicone lubricant, or did you need to replace the o-ring all together in the end?

I just raised the water level on mine tonight and it's been leaking from the twist-lock from the start. Pretty annoying.

silicone lube will work for a while, eventually my o-ring gave out no matter how much lube I gobbed on. Just go to an auto parts store and get a new one it's only $1 and they should have plenty.

I had probs with BOTH my pumps on the EX-2 leaking for a while. I lubed them up with vaseline and it worked after that. I was unable to find the right size o-ring for the pumps though.

You mean the O-rings for the union fittings on the pumps?
O-Rings USA would most likely have some that fit but knowing the exact size would be very difficult. They use Spears unions so in a pinch, you could get the correct size and schedule unions from a Spears supplier and just use the O-rings. Or, contact Spears and either check into them sending you replacement O-Rings for the unions OR giving you the exact size O.D. and I.D. and then getting them from O-Rings USA or another supplier.

I received my skimmer on Monday. It was packaged well in that shrinking form fitting foam with pump installed. No damage at all. Mint condition except for a light scrape of the black plastic on top of the collection cup.

I tested it in the sink that night and I was disappointed in the amount of noise the aquabee pump makes. I was under the impression these pumps were quiet, as the tank I am setting up will be in my bedroom. It is really loud. I tore it down and checked to make sure the plastic flap in the impeller housing wasn't sticking and also inspected the impeller. Both seem to be in working order.

I ordered the EX-1 over the tunze 9010 because i felt the DAS skimmer would provide better skimming on my barebottom 40g breeder, but I am now thinking it was a mistake ordering the DAS due to noise concerns(I enjoy sleeping. The sound of a HOB aquaclear on another tank in the room doesn't bother me, but the aquabee is roughly 10x noisier in comparison).

Any ideas? Is this a defective pump or was I expecting too much from a NW pump?

The noise should go away once the skimmer breaks in. My mj1200 makes more noise then my ab2001s.

I have a 120G Oceanic Tech Tank on order and expect to have about 215 gallons total in the system. I'll be keeping fish, softies and LPSs but no SPS so I'm thinking about ordering the EX-2. Do you guys think that would be a good choice and if so where is the best place to order from? Petorama?

when I put the stock impeller on my aquabee it took a couple of days for the noise to die down. Now it's very silent. If you think aquabee's are loud try a genX needlewheel :)

Ex-2 would work well and i believe petorama is the only place selling them now. Its a big skimmer so make sure you can fit it in your set up.

EX-2 will handle 215 gallons without problem and would be a good choice. Pet-O-rama has been getting the 1's and 2's out and in the hands of buyers in a matter of days.

sayn3ver ... The EX-2 has 2 of those pumps and is still quiet. I was really pleased with how quiet the aquabess are after haveing a skimmer with the Octopus pumps which definitely could qualify as loud. Noise is not a concern for me but still, I would call the Aquabee pumps very quiet. My cooling fams make more noise. Something must be up with the pump if it is really that noisy. I would give it a couple days as USC suggested and if it is still noisy, contact Pet-O-Rama. Does it run hot? Mine both run what I would describe as cool to the touch.

Just so that I'm clear on it -
The fitting where the water input penetrates the main tube is 1/2"?
The fittings where the recirc pump penetrates the main tube are 1"?
The fitting where the water output penetrates the main tube is 1-1/4"?

TIA.

I asked this a few pages back and I think it got lost in the shuffle.
Could someone with an EX-1 verify these measurements for me?
I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks.

Everyone,

Thanks for the responses. I only ran it once for about 15 minutes. The tank isn't set up yet, but will be soon so I haven't had the ability to have it run to break in yet. I am going to try and find a spot where i can have it setup in the house this weekend and let it hopefully quiet down. I normally haven't had an issue with devices making noise, but this was substaintially louder than anything I have currently running or have heard in the local fish stores.

When I did have it running the pump ran cool, but I wouldn't expect a device to heat up in such short of time.

We set up our EX1 and it was pretty much silent from the get go....it is amazing...and a work horse....I still can't thank everyone enough for the recommendations!!!!!

This week i learned something I used a new Eheim 1250 pump to remove and replace water in my nano 16g bow during a room change. well i was surprise that the Eheim pump which from EVERY comment i have seen on RC it is silent. Well the 1250 is not silent. My aquaclear 70 is silent and several pages back when i tested my new EX-1 the aquabee pump was not silent also, but it makes less of noise than the Eheim 1250. I really don't think any skimmer can be silent. One person's silent is noise to another. I too was going to get the 9010 but two people said it wasn't so quite like as people say it is. I got the Rio silencer which i will try out in week when my new tank is up.
