Dave's 150G Starphire Zeo Reef~

BUT look at that frag rack :eek1: get busy mouting those bad boys man.

I've been pretty sick the last week or so now and haven't quite gotten all my spunk back as yet. Once I get all the way mended and get my energy back I'll probably start to do some more permanent mounting of frags.

Dave, your tank is looking great!!! I never got back to you about the frags. I'm kinda thinking about going fish only for awhile.

I love the goldflake.

HEY JOHN, where've you been??? I tried to PM you about picking up some frags but no word? Hope all is well with you and yours!

Hmm, fish only eh... what spurred that decision out of curiosity?

The GF is my favorite, always wanted one! How's your Regal doing???

I lost about half of my caps, all my LPS and other SPS still look good. I'm sure it was my fault, lets just say that I'm not real good at doing water tests on my tank (cal, alk,ph,ect.)

the regal is still doing great, I don't think he eats enough. so that worries me, but he looks good.

Bummer about your caps, which ones did you have/lose?

If you change your mind about taking me up on frags let me know... You get whatever you want that I've got, k!

they really weren't anything special. just a green apple, orange and a green with blue. I have frags of each in my nano.

Well...

Well...

I'm really bummed... Just found my Labouti Wrasse dried up from too much carpet surfing on the floor "behind" the tank. :sad1:

That's the "only" place I don't have a panel covering the area between my canopy and the glass. Just figures....

So far here's the surfer list:
1.) Mc Cosker (found him months ago on floor after cleaning the tank. Had panels down only briefly. He was on the floor in front of the tank.)
2.) Carpenter Wrasse (Actually never found him. He simply vansished?)
3.) Labouti Wrasse (Found today "behind" the tank. No panel, have to fix that but a little too late)

I'm real tight on cash right now too. Now chance of replacing him anytime soon at all. :furious:

Soory to hear that Dave. They can find the smallest place to escape.

I have notice monites are very sensative to salintiy or K+ swings. Did yours turn pale first?

Dave - Tank looks great, thanks for PICs.

Thanks Brian... I got him as a baby and he was really plumping up too. He was one of my favorite fish. Second only to the Gold Flake, in my tank anyway.

Oh well... what do ya do? Part of the hobby unfortunately.

No prob on the pics Tony. I was planning some new pics this weekend but I've got a GHA problem going right now. Gonna wait till it clears some till I post anymore pics.

As far as the caps, I haven't lost any... yet. I almost lost my Seasons Greetings but it's hanging tough. That was from the GHA though not due to Alk or K+ problems. Both have been rock solid for me with only regular water changes and my Ca Rx.

The post you quote above is actually from another reefer.

Pale monti's are a tell tell sign of low mg as well. Give that one a double check as well.

Sorry to hear about your fish troubles Dave. A real disappointment. :(

I would love to get some of the fish you have but am scared they will become my cats dinner once on the floor. :crazy1:

Only wrasse I really want is the six line at this stage.

You mentioned GHA? What are your No3 & Po4 readings? I would really like to feed my fishes a little more but I'm scared of raising those parameters on my tank too.

Hey Andrew,

Yeah it's definitely a bummer, I really feel bad about the poor guy. I actually think I know when he jumped too. I heard a really loud SPLASH the other night after the lights were out but didn't think too much of it. I won't make that mistake again. Just wish I would have checked it out when I heard it. :mad2:

As far as No3 it reads within acceptable range .02ppm. Po4 has read 0.00 for some time on a LFS colorimeter but I haven't checked lately. I have one of the new Hanna Checker P04 meters on order and hopefully should get it soon. I do have an Elos Po4 kit and I get a flat zero reading with that. I presume whatever I get even with the Hanna will be erroneous though based on the GHA. Whatever Po4 that's present will probably get used up by the GHA.

I've been manually removing it for about 2 months now and it's really driving me nuts. Got new pics of the GHA into G. Alexander and am anxiously awaiting his battle plan. As for me I've switched back down to 250Radiums vs. the new 400's I got until this dissipates. Also, I have suspended all frozen foods until the algae is gone. Just flake's and pellets....

Sorry to hear about your Labouti man beautiful fish. Is there another fish causing issues?

I went the oposite direction and stopped feeding all dried processed foods ;) I just rinse PE mysis everytime I feed.

Good luck Dave

Thanks Dan, I was really attached to that guy. Didn't notice any other fish causing issues. We've had large mosquito flies around here lately. Can't help but wonder if one was on the water surface and he was just trying to get a meal?

Well, perhaps I'll give that a try Mark. Do you soak your PE in Selcon or any vitamin solutions at all? I was and wonder if it had anything to do with my GHA or not. This may seem a dumb question but are you supposed to rinse the Mysis or other frozen stuff "after" it's been soaked? I just figured not rinsing and adding it in with the food was probably good for the corals. It would seem I was mistaken if so. Much to my own dismay....

Thanks

Definitely try soaking your mysis and then rinse it through. You can use a small brine net or put the mysis in a ramakin and seperate the water by finger.. lol.

I use Immunstabil instead of Selcon now.. but I only use it every once in awhile.

Ever find you're your own worst enemy?

Ever find you're your own worst enemy?

Well,

I've decided today that I've been the culprit of my dreaded GHA problem. After all these years reefing until the last 6-8 months I've never fed a lot of frozen foods, just flake pretty much. Within this past bit of time I began the frozen foods which by themselves aren't bad. However, when you don't rinse your foods (primarily PE Mysis) and slather them in Selco and vitamins and even add Tahitian blend on occasion thinking your doing your reef a favor... well, you're not.

I just got schooled on better handling procedures for frozen foods and it's made a difference already. For one the foam on my skimmer doesn't get knocked out of commission for a couple hours. In fact it hasn't so much as budged since I started rinsing everything. Not only that but I was told when using the Selco & vitamins to rinse that as well once it's had a chance to soak. Additionally I believe I've been overfeeding as well....

So, shake off the dust get back up and try again. Just goes to show you're never too old to learn something new. Just wish I hadn't given myself this lovely green hairy gift. But I'm guessing with proper food handling and less feeding it should begin to dissipate over the coming weeks ahead. Hopefully not too much more than that? :hmm5:

In the days ahead

Once things clear up a bit and my colors come back, I'll put up some new pics. However until then I've decided not to take any. Well, maybe I'll catalog the changes and post once the GHA's gone.

I've heard a lot of folks rinse, but is it really that necessary? I feed 3 cubes a day, but I have never had any WQ or algae problems. I figured the fuge and GFO were doing a fine job.

I feel your pain. Always wanted a Leopard Wrasse so I picked one up a couple of weeks ago. In my enthusiasm to make sure she eating well and enough, I went a little heavy handed with the feeding. And of course .... blam .... GHA. Now starts the road to eliminate it but I have only myself to blame.

Sorry to hear about the GHA issues Dave. It would be nice for you to document the before and after. Also have you vacuumed your sump lately? When I did it a few months ago, my nitrates dropped signifcantly afterwards. Good luck.
