Day trip advice

My fam and I are trying to make a little day trip on sat and we are thinking either the buffalo or syracuse zoo any suggestions

I'm obviously partial to the Syracuse Zoo. The tigers are incredible. Haven't ever been to the Buffalo Zoo, unless you count the bars on Chippewa or Elmwood.

Added bonus, the Syracuse Zoo is less than a mile from ABC Reefs.....(shameless plug)

If you want to extend the trip to Niagara Falls, I highly recommend the butterfly conservatory and the aviary (both on Canadian side). The aviary is a diamond in the rough. Tons of cool reptiles and birds in an amazing setting!

Now Cully, stop being so sensitive.

Nobody said that Syracuse was fugly.

Everybody knows that she's got a great personality.

:D

It might be a bit more than a day trip:

but I'd vote for the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium in PA. A 2 for 1 and something different.
It's a holiday long weekend too. So, there's more time.

Plus there's other places to check out on the way there or back.
Like that fish place.

'An stay a night in a nice budget hotel on the way back.
Maybe check out "Splash Lagoon" in Erie. The kids always love a good water park.

The buffalo zoo sucks. I was just there a month ago and was bored out of my mind. I'm walking distance from the zoo and still don't like it.

If you ever end up going down to Pitts,
you'll need 5 hours to get there.
But if you start out early. There's plenty of time.
It's well worth it.

PPG Aquarium
Pennsylvania Waters Exhibit - a river exhibit that flows along the front of the new building, with waterfalls descending into a pool of North American fish from the region.

Open Ocean Tank - a two-story, 100,000 gallon tank that combines sharks, fish, and simulated coral to resemble a more diverse and complete ecosystem.

Amazon Rainforest Exhibit - a two-story recreation of a flooded Amazon rainforest, including lush plant life, piranhas and huge South American pacu.

Two Oceans- a cold water marine exhibit featuring a uniquely shaped window that allows visitors to view fish swimming above and alongside them.

Stingray Tunnel - a unique educational exhibit where children can crawl through a clear tunnel to view stingrays swimming above and alongside them.

As well as a couple of Reef Aquariums set up by Mike Paletta.
(a local Expert Reef aquarist who's written books as well as worked on coral husbandry and has a couple corals coined after his name. Paletta's blue Acros and Paletta purple porites.)

The Pittsburgh Zoo is one of only six major zoo and aquarium combinations in the United States. Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Highland Park, the zoo sits on 77 acres (310,000 m2) of park land where it exhibits over 4,000 animals representing 475 species, over 70 of which are threatened or endangered. The zoo also participates in 64 Species Survival Plans.

(Beats the hell out of NY Zoos.)

Start out early, spend the major portion of the day. Eat out and head back at your leisure in the evening or next day.
But that's just what I'd do.
Just an idea.

We are huge zoo fans. Been to almost every zoo on the east coast and some on the west. Best zoo in the area hands down is the cleveland zoo and aquarium even better than toronto. and cheap, only $10 when we went. Most that are worth it are about $20. and while in cleveland theres the rock and roll hall of fame, the "christmas story" house/museum and the great lakes brewery bar and restaurant. We get in free to the Buffalo zoo because we are contributors but its not a zoo I would pay or travel to see IMO.

+1 to Cleveland Zoo

It's huge! We are members of the Buffalo zoo as well but only because it's 15 minutes away and free admission to members. I also really enjoyed the Toledo, OH zoo. They have a large aquatic building that was a family favorite.
