dday80's 70 CAD lights build

Hey everyone,

I'm dredging my thread up! I have been neglecting the tank for a while as far as progress towards corals since my last update. It has been fish only. I recently bought the bulk supplement kit from BRS in order to get my Alk, Ca, and Mg up to par.

Current parameters are:

Alk: 55ppm, 1.1meq/L, 3.075 dKH (per Hanna checker)
Ca: 330 ppm (per Elos test kit)
Mag: 1125 (per Salifert test kit)

I plan on raising the Mg first and then slowly bring up the Ca and Alk over the next few days. My target params are: Ca 420, Alk 7 dKH, and Mag 1250.

I would welcome any advice! I plan on being more active in the club. Priorities of late have been family, work, and school.

I would just get it set. If there's no coral in the tank just raise mag first and then bring your alk and ca where you want them.

Cool Drew is back.

Like Sean said if you only have fish raising levels will be easier since they don't get affected like corals do.

new fish!

new fish!

Hey guys quick update!

MG is at 1290 and I dosed alk last night. I haven't retested yet today. Also my new addition from blue zoo is doing well. A scribbled rabbitfish.

Hey guys,

Things have been coming along. My Mag is up to 1380 and Ca is 410. I've been really fighting my alk to increase though. It started at 3.08 and is now at 4.87. After a discussion with another reefer, I was notified of a Hanna alk reagent recall a while ago. Unfortunately, I think I may be in that group as my reagent expires in October. I checked their site, and am unable to see if my lot is affected because it's "unavailable to the public." With this information, I decided to pick up another bottle of reagent from BRS and a back up salifert alk test kit. Should be here mid next week and we'll go from there.

I also have the PAR meter (Thanks Yuri) and will be playing with that this weekend. A challenge I'm running into there is that I have LED's. After talked to apogee today they need some more information on the color spectrum from ecotech in order to give me some % errors to calculate.

If it was easy everyone would do it right?

Hey drew - I have some
More info about the Hanna alk reagent recall if you're interested. It only affects the reagent after it's been opened IF it's been lying on its side. It has to do with the reagent coming into contact with the foil on the cap. If you store it upright, it's not a problem. I always have like at least 5 bottles of reagent around. Hit me up if you need anything.

Hey Sean,

It's been lying on it's side for months. I assume that it must be affected. I'll be storing my next batch upright for sure. I'll be up your way on Saturday. I'd love to stop by and see the tank if you have time. It would probably be late afternoon.

Par readings!

Par readings!

Hey guys I just took some PAR readings and here's what I got. I have my radion XR15 pro's at 85% overall intensity, but with the white turned waaay down. UV 100%, B 100%, RB 100%, W 24%, G 24%, R 24%. These numbers are per the success of ecotech coral lab.

Paper found here: http://ecotechmarine.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Ecotech_CoralLab_WP1.pdf

In other news, I tested alk at Sean's on Saturday and it was 11.6! My alk reagent for my hanna tester was obviously wrong giving readings < 5.0 :mad2: I ordered some more tests from BRS and Hanna is also sending me some replacement reagent. What do you guys think of the PAR readings?

Interesting, you're readings are similar to my tank but I'm using Reef Breeders Superlux LEDs but of course my setup is on a smaller scale compared to yours.

Good to know!

I got my alk tests in today and got some results:

Salifert 10.3 dKH
Hanna 9.7 dKH

There's a bit of a difference, but nothing like the 11.6 I got at Sean's compared to my old hanna reagent which was reading < 5dKH. So I'm happy with my numbers.

Drew is back and I'm back. Looking nice!

I just downloaded the new ecotech live update. I'm trying out the coral lab template.

Have u seen it or tried it?
