Debating if the Apex is worth it for me?

If you consider it takes the place of timers, ato, & temp control it helps swallow the cost. My favorite part is the tracking of parameters. I like to look back at trends and compare.
Agree 100%. Super helpful to see trends in your parameters and be able to troubleshoot with actual data.

I am just starting my first tank and I got one. I have started too many hobbies on a shoe string and ended up spending more money in the long run. I figure if I start with the control it should limit my "double or trade-up" purchases. Besides, I don't think the wife would have gone for the tank without the safety notifications.

If you get seriously into this hobby you will eventually "want" and "need" a controller, so might as well get it day 1 if $ isn't prohibiting it.

Ha, I suppose the first part is true - took me 26 years to get to the point that I 'needed' one though  I would also suggest that a general purpose controller like the apex does nothing to improve a tank's ability to better support livestock - whether fish or inverts - it's simply about convenience. I don't generally like to make purchase recommendation lest I fall into the trap of 'recommending what I have because I have it', but I would always counsel folks new to the hobby to invest in things that do have a direct impact on the health of livestock - skimmers, lights, powerheads, a calcium reactor.
