December meeting

Ho ho ho boys and girls.

Tis the season for our December meeting. Unless someone has someting new to offer in terms of a location or date / time, we'll be meeting at Union Hotel at 280 Mission in SR at 7pm on the 2nd Friday of this month, December 10.

In addition to our usual fun, we'll be selecting our next President. The club should start the new year with new leadership. I've been pres for upwards of the last two years, and it's time for new energy and new ideas.

Bull out.

With final projects due for my SRJC classes... AND my usual publishing schedule... I won't be able to make this month's meeting.

Very much enjoyed last month's though, and hope to make more in the future.

-Nate

PS that mille isn't back to green yet, Joe, but it does seem to be perking up a bit - I'll keep you posted!

Grant,

Congrats on the nomination! I think you'll win in a landslide and with a Great VP like Ken and your truely as treasurer we're in good shape. We got $60 in the Club fund Yaa Hoo!

I think it needs to be someone who at least has been around for long enough to know the members . I will take on another role if I can help but not Pres, thx for the thought thou.

Hee hee hee. I also think Grant would make a good president. You think I knew everyone when I began my term buddy? With me as VP and Bob as Treas it'd be a solid board.

I had actually approached Grant with the idea a month or two ago. I am pleased to hear others feel similarly. His response then was the same as his posting now.

So we're going to have to either wear him down (Grant! Grant! Grant!) or come up with another name. The enthusiastic new guy with a good looking tank is always a prime candidate, which brings us back to Grant! Grant! Grant! :D

When I joined the club Mike and Jeff were copresidents (you lurkers should come to meetings again!), then it was Jake pres and Bob vp, then myself pres, with James then Owen as vp and Bob treas.

The job doesn't entail a ton of work. At it's easiest, you post whether there should even be a meeting or not. At it's most involved, you're coordinating industry professionals with meetings, shopping for and caring for raffle frags and carrying the "President's plastic tub" to meetings.

There's a ton of personal satisfaction to be had when your efforts pay off, such as, in my opinion, last December's meeting which was hosted by Tom. The successful points of that meeting in my mind were:

- good turnout by members.

- tons of yummy food and drink provided by members and our host.

- meeting somewhere other than our "default" location. While the Union Hotel is a wonderful place to get together when we don't have anything special going on, having something special going on is extra sweet. And Tom was very kind to open his house to us.

- guest speaker: Randy Reed from Reef Nutrition gave an excellent talk on reef foods, appropriate food sizes and nutritional content.

Another very successful meeting in my mind was the one hosted by Steve Ruddy last summer which had similar components. And I was also pleased with how well received by local retailers the idea of meeting at their stores was.

You'll notice that a number of the key elements to above average meetings involve member participation way more than club officer efforts. All I had to do was ask who would be up for hosting and send an email or make a phone call or two to arrange the speaker or location. The rest was the enthusiasm of our members. And as we all know and have heard over and over, if we all do a little, no one has to do a lot.

2011 is an opportunity for the club to continue to move forward, to provide a local source of reef keeping knowledge and a place where we can encourage and support each other as we share our experiences, our frags and our love of reefing. Let's do it!!

Who is willing to take the organizational reins as we continue on? Don't make us nominate whoever doesn't show up at the next meeting!

Grant, you would make a great prez. I don't have a lot of time right now so maybe down the road when I have more time. Let's nominate someone else :D

Tom, I too am overloaded at work.It may not show because I am very enthusiastic about reefing but my day job consists of running 3 differant companies, a construction company, a kitchen and bath showroom and my rental properties. The reason I nominated you was that having been reefing for over 20 years you and others bring a lot more knowledge and connections for possible speakers and events, tours and possible access to other resources that I do not have as yet. I will be glad to take on a role in the club to help in any way I can. A thought on that would be maybe we all put our heads and resources together and start a club frag tank. Aseparate system to Quarantine, dip growout and frag specimens of coral for meetings and swaps. I have mentioned this before and would be willing to take this on with help from the other members. We could even get involver in some frag pack purchases that seem to always be flying about on RC. Of course I would need help with quarantine processes to start with if we did this. Just a thought. Grant

Grant, thanks for that, I know about not having enough time of the day and multiple jobs. I like your idea of a joint frag tank as long as we have the right attitude and the giving spirit then it will works. Another idea is a members fragging program. I'll talk to you more about that off line.

Sorry but I can not make this month's meeting. I have my work holiday party during the evening.
Kindest regards,
Mike
