Does anyone have any idea how this stuff accomplishes the stated goal (or if it does)?

Looks like it's just a filter that traps particles so you can easily remove them before they turn into ammonia/nitrite/nitrate.
 
I think I'll avoid using it in my nano until I understand it better. If it just releases a carbon source, it could be detrimental since I have no skimmer.
 
I think the real goal of this product is to make money by selling hobbyists an item they would otherwise get cheaper by implying that it does something more than it really does.

Yes, perhaps so. They also sell pads for phosphate, pads for ammonia, and just straight floss.
 
FWIW, I won't use stuff unless I can figure out what's in it or at least be reasonaly sure of what it is.
