Deltec vs Octopus?

I have tried manny different skimmers through the years and i just finally gave in and bought a Deltec and they are well worth the money. By far the best skimmer i ever had.

Pcific Coast like Coral Vue and other vendors get their skimmers from the same manufacturer in China. Infact a Coralife Super Skimmer, a Pacific Coast PS100, and a Catalina super vortex skimmer are one and the same. Just different label is all.

thats is NOT the octopus 200 nw. the octopus 200 is a in sump model and not a recirculating pump.

that is twice the wrong photo has been posted. the other wrong photo is the the octopus down draft.

the the octopus 200 is made by coralvue
but i think the octopus 200 it one of the best for the money.
Wrong again. That BIG skimmer in the photo IS the Reef Octopus NW200 The recirculation model and yes it can be used as an external skimmer.

you can not compare the two skimmers on equal terms.
you can only compare the octupus to how close the product
competes with the benchmark. which is the deltec. remember
it is less pricey & a easier unit to obtain for the masses.

the photo in your linked is sold as a
"Pacifc Coast RPS-3000 Recirculating Protein Skimmer. 7.8 inch diameter. 29.64"

now im a horrible speller but Pacifc Coast and Octopus are to defferent names, and to defferent brands.

im sure they are made at the same plant like you say. buit so were Volkswagon's and Porche's

but if you want to compare products we need to use the right names, or ESP, and my ESP is a little rusty. ive have yet to see the model in your photo sold as a Octopus.

bring me up to speed here are they any other names that we are calling octopus???

The "Pacifc Coast RPS-3000 Recirculating Protein Skimmer.at $500 is not the value that the octopus 200 is.

thier is only $100 defferent between the Pacifc Coast RPS-3000 and the DELTEC AP600 in that case the deltec is the better value.

Well those two picture certainly make the case, of note:

The Deltec pictured has pretty much a "white cream" in the body = massive amount of bubbles. This is what is meant by an excellent needlewheel & matching the pump to the body. But they've been at this a long time = they've gotten it right.

The Octopus shown in the link has more gray in the body, a sure sign that it's not making the same amount of bubbles or the pump isn't matched as well to the body = less efficient/effective.

With the Deltec/H&S skimmers you get an Eheim pump, one of the most reliable/efficient pumps on the market (probably 2nd only to Red Dragon). Any notion that current crop of far east imports is even close is just plain silly (note: I'm not saying that geographic region couldn't build a pump of the same quality - but then it would cost just as much).

Buy what you like & feel works for you.

Wouldn't it make more since to compare a ferrari to something like a ford gt40? It maybe a ford but it can still out run alot of ferrari's!

What i was trying to say is ANY car will get you where you want to go, only SOME will get you there is style, comfort, and class. I would never put an Octopus in the even near the same class of a Deltec.

The title and entire topic of this thread is borderline Blasphemy :hammer:

With skimmers you get what you pay for.

In all the skimmers I've seen tried and seen before, the Deltec AP851 is the best skimmer I have owned. It has been the most consistent and most reliable skimmer I have ever used.

I really do not want to ramble on about which skimmer is better.
As they say "one mans garbage is another mans treasure"

Without going into too much details, I know for a fact that Pacific Coast "brand" skimmers as the one shown are in fact Reef Octopus skimmers. Pacific Coast don't actually make any of the products that they sell, they just buy them from overseas and slap a label on it and Voila!

I agree though that the Reef Octopus NW 200 (non-recirculation model) is not in the same class as a Deltec and should not be compared as so.

A better somparison would be Reef Octopus vs. ASM or Reef Octopus vs. ER in the same comparable models of course.

OCTOPUS down draft AT WORK

OCTOPUS down draft AT WORK

FOR THE MONEY IT GETS THE JOB DONE

I TESTED IT IN THE SAME SUMP WITH MY ETS 800

I also fooled around and change the pump and put a Mag 18 on it
it is doing a great job and can take the upgrade in size
with no problems
I also added elbow to the out put riser pipe

THE CONSTRUCTION AND PARTS ARE not bad
for the over all cost of this skimmer

HOPE THIS HELPS

IF YOU CANT SPEND BIG BUCKS ON A SKIMMER
THIS ONE WILL DO THE JOB FOR YOU

It TAKES too 2 weeks for it too break in so be patient

SOD

skimmers I have used over the years
3 EURO' CS2 ,CS3, CS12-2
3 ETS ETS 800. ETS 600,ETS REEFDEVIL
2 ASM

And let's not forget with PCI you get their "world class" support (sarcasm)

I dumped everything made by them because of the poor support (and the products were decent). Everything was "try this, try that....it MUST be your fault". Every single non-answer evasion you can think of......AND....let's not forget it was PCI who spouted the "that's not rust, that's an ion attractor" excuse for having stainless steel inside (& not sealed) a pump.

I like to save a buck as much as anyone but no thanks, I'll pass.

Yeah but the thing is how good or bad PCI customer support is has no bearing how good or bad the Reef Octopus skimmers are. They (PCI) are not the only vendor selling these skimmers.

Not directly, but that's part of the whole package. Once past 30 days you're off (in general) the vendor's support system & onto the manufacturer.

And even at that given the pics - the Octopus doesn't make the bubbles a Deltec does, same as a Deltec doesn't make the bubbles a Bubble King does (the latter two I've seen, the former is just the picture shown).

I am actually thinking of trying the larger of the two needle wheel skimmers on my 150 however I have noticed that in all the pics of the skimmate so so far there seems to be a common light brown almost coffee color skimmate and I am wondering if this is due to deisgn(meaning yoiu cant do too many adjustments) or if this a user thing!?!?

WOW...."Pacific Coast Imports" does not give good customer support"
I dont know who you have been speaking to but I have only recieved the best of support from Steve at PCI,any issues are handeled right away with service not many can give.

That's just it. We haven't seen any skimmate photos from a needle wheel version fo the Octopus skimmer yet. Those photos posted previously are from a downdraft skimmer and infact the owner even stated that he skimmed on the wet side as the cup filled overnight.

That is my DD skimmer cup in the pic. Yes, I choose to skim on the very wet side. The pump that came with it is as near to silent as I would expect possible and adds no heat to the tank (measurable anyways). It makes a very nice foam and the tank ORP is up consistently about 20 points compared to my DIY/Jebo 520 skimmer I put together with the Sedra 9000 NW which worked great. I will also add that dealing with Chinese manufacturers I know they are very good at copying things, especially plastics. I wouldn't say that Octopus has to have an R&D department at all. Why would they when they can just let Deltec spend the money and then copy it? It's not nice but that's how it is.
