Desjardini sailfin

Well, the LFS did not disappoint!! While they didnt have the juvi sailfins, there was an absolutely stunning 5" adult desjardini. They have had him for two months! They fed him for me and I watched him graze on the new era grazing wafers! Those wafers are incredible btw. He was on sale for 64$ and I was dead set on not walking out without him. My buddy was with me and talked some sense into me and the smarter side of my brain took over! I decided best to pass on him for now but enjoyed watching him none the less!

Thanks for the video! Awesome tank and fish! How big is the desjardini? It looks to still have some juvi colors. How long have you had him and has he grown since youve gotten him? What size tank is he in? Sorry for all the questions im very inquisitive! Ok last question, how does he get along with your hippo?

Thank You. The little guy is approaching 4", definitely still has most of his juvi colors. Starting to see patterns developing on his head. I've had him 6-8 months. When I got him he was probably 1" long. He's in a 210, I know too small. If he gets too aggressive and pacy I'll try and get him donated to the Shed Aquarium. He doesn't like the Hippo much. He chases him away when there's Nori in the tank. I'm worried the aggressiveness is keeping the Hippo from growing fast enough. I'm working on upping the feedings.

I have a peaceful yellow tang that leaves everyone alone (even tangs that have been in the tank prior).. How would a Sailfin do with him since they have a similar look...

I decided that today was the day!! I saw this little guy at the LFS and took the plunge. He is about 1-1/4" and full juvi colors! His doral fin is a little roughed up but the manager at the store confirmed he got a little roughed up by a powder blue tang when it first came in. They moved yhe little desjardini to a tank with only a wrasse and a pair of clowns after the pb had picked on him the first day. He is otherwise very healthy, he has some decent weight on him for only being at the fish store 2.5 weeks and they fed him pellets in front of me and he devoured them. He is in QT right now and he ate some mysis tonight and was grazing on the overflow of the qt tank! I cant wait for him to be ready for the DT! This was him in the specimen container when I first got him out of the bag

What do you guys think I should do when it comes time to put him in the DT. I need to nail out a good plan now while he is in QT. I'm concerned because of his size vs my current tangs. Neither of the two I have are "big" by any means but they are massive compared to this little guy. Both are around 4.5" and fat little pigs! They are both well established in the tank and have been in the 125 together for 8 months. Im not as concerned about the yellow tang he is pretty docile but the lavender has gotten quite aggressive here recently. She never hurts the other fish but does like to show the yellow tang and male square back anthia who is boss once in a while. I remember when I added the yellow tang she gave him the blues for a few days but the yellow tang was big enough to hold his own. The anthia is about the same size as the lavender and takes only so much from the lavendet before he busts back and checks the lavender. Im concerned that with the desi being 1-1/4 inches that if the lavender gets ****y she could seriously hurt the little guy. What would you do and how much " fighting" is ok before I need to intervene if it gets to that point? By the way on a side not my significant other has made a major revelation and decided to let me knock out this upgrade "whenever im ready"!!!!!!

Firstly, congrats.
As for adding it to the tank, mine went in right away and no one bothered it at all. It is a little smaller than my clowns, foxface and regal but they all give it respect, especially since it has the fins open most of the time.

Thats exactly what I was thinking!! LOL! Thank you very much on the congratulations I am very proud of my new buddy! He couldnt be prettier. I never imagined the juvis could look so good. After seeing tons of juvenile sailfins, i figured the juvi desi would look very similar, but not so!

As for adding him to the tank I dont think he will have any problems with the clowns, goby, dartfish, mandarin, or anthia. My main concern is how my current tangs will treat him. I fear I may have to eventually get rid of my lavender because she is so aggressive. I'm hoping she completely shocks the heck outta me and welcomes the newcomer with open fins! Any more advice on adding the desi and how to handle possible aggression is greatly appreciated!

Do you have an acclimation box? Normally when I introduce a new fish I put it in the acclimation box inside the tank and watch it for at least a day. If there are signs of aggression it stays in there until things simmer down for a day. I don't think you have to worry about the non-transferable in your tank.

Rearrange the rockwork to throw off any territories the fish have established; that way a new addition is not at a disadvantage.

Acclimation box is a good idea. Rearranging the rocks doesn't really work in a reef tank - at least, not in mine.

+1 on acclimation box, for more than a day even. You can add PVC to it for the tang to hide in for security.

Another option is to remove the aggressor for a week or two while the new guy is settling in, then reintroduce.

Don't underestimate the yellow tang, they can be vicious little buggers. When I'm adding new fish to an established hierarchy (tang-wise anyway) I actually worry more about aggression from the fish at the bottom of the pecking order. They don't want to be last, and they have something to prove. Good luck, good looking baby sailfin. Take your significant other up on that upgrade soon!

Mike s what do you mean "non transferrable in your tank?" I do have an acclimation box but it is small. I wonder if that will stress him out being a little box for too long. I got it when I got my clowns and i think its only 10x8 but im not 100% sure just guessing based on how it looks, ill measure when I get home. Does the desjardini I got appear to have any adult coloration yet? I freak myself out and keep wondering if I was sold a regular sailfin, though i saw it one tank over from a regular sailfin and the looked very different. Perhaps some reassurance from you guys will put my mind at ease

Lol, sorry that is what autocorrect on my tablet came up with for non-tangs. That size acclimation box should be fine as a temporary home as long as it allows water to pass through it. It's better than have it get harassed and then trying to catch it. It looks like a juvenile desjardini to me. The regular sailfins have much broader brown stripes. I went through the same concerns when I got mine last month.

Lol ok. So when I put him in the acclimation box for a few days if I dont see any aggression, that should be a pretty good sign right? The reason im so concerned is because of the major size difference. I feel like if the two tangs gang up on the sailfin, they could kill it in less than a minute. Maybe im over reacting and it will be fine lol. The acclimation box has suction cups. Do you think I should stick it to the front wall high up in the tank or down low? Or should I just let it rest on the sandbed? Im glad you also think it is a desjardini that puts my mind at ease a little. Anyone else?

You want to leave it in there long enough for everyone to get used to each other. There might be some aggression initially but as long as things settle down for a day or two you should be OK. I keep my box up high so that I can feed the fish a little.

Ok cool, hes already accepting pellets, blackworms, mysis and nori. As soon as he gets a little fatter and im 100% sure that no illness is going to rear its ugly head ill give the acclimation box a shot
