detritus free sump??

If you have a sink close buy I hook a python to my sink which causes a vaccum and sucks it all out of the tank. My sump i also on the floor but the python product attaches to the sink faucet which produces a syphon by passing water throught it. Works great if sink close by.

you can DIY a Python pretty cheap too, for a few bucks you can get the sink attachment in the water bed dept at wal-mart and a garden hose, just make sure you cut the brass end off that goes into the tank.

I'd avoid the garden hose unless its food safe hose (I think aquatic eco systems has some, and I'm sure many other places). A lot of regular garden hoses are treated with fungicides.

I must admit I'm completely taken a back seat on this, it's 2000hrs and those little fishies look exactly like they did an hour fifteen ago.......

got an alarm set for 2100hrs, we'll see how they fair then.

on a side note, the skimmer foam has kicked back in, it had collapsed with the addition of the fishies to the sock.

2200hrs, i turned the skimmer off to take the pic that way i could get a better pic of the silversides, it was hard to see them all that good with all the bubbles but to me they look exactly like they did 3 hours ago. i don't see a need to continue, i think we all know what the results are gonna be...

@philpot

Sorry about hi-jacking your thread :)

whoa whoa whoa, slow down, i'm not a rocket scientist...
so, what you're saying jetcat...is that after a few hours, the silversides weren't reduced to skeletons...?!?!

I-N-T-E-R-E-S-T-I-N-G!

yes, i found this that funny :lmao:

i guess they had to be more recently dead fish to be reduced to skeletons :) or maybe it had something to do with how they died, jumped into the overflow and then made it down the standpipe to the sock in the first place. Who Knows?

Thanks, JetCat! That made my night. ;)

I'm sure allot of inexperienced reefers who saw the thread title and had detritus built up in their sump came in to read the suggestions posted and might of walked away with the impression Hey, it's OK to just let detritus collect in my sump, heck the bugs will eat it and if they don't, it's not gonna cause water quality problems anyways, Rich said so and those filter socks.......bad for my system..........heck if i didn't have hand on with the use of filter socks i might of been inclined to believe such a post myself.

some people on online boards often post with just the intent to be confrontational and stir the pot, when it's such a no brainier like this, i don't mind taking the time to test it out and post the results, it quiets the noise considerably.

for at least the last 15 years I sleep on average 2 hours each night and have 'conditioned' myself to that (not by my own choosing mind you) and you're right that leaves me with allot of time that the average Joe doesn't have.

JetCat thanks for the doing that test. I think it has convinced me to use a filter sock. Could I fully emerse the sock and "tie" it to the end of my overflow pipe - this might become a pain to keep cleaning though?

i like to keep the top of the sock a few inches above the water line but i see no reason you can't tie it off as you describe.

on the cleaning............it's a huge PITA if you only have one or two of them, but if you have several you can just swap them out every other day and then only have to clean them once a week.

what i do when i pull them off one of my sumps is place them in an old salt bucket (they stay damp this way and are easier to clean), when i get down low on clean ones i dump them all into the washing machine and put it on an 18 min wash cycle with nothing in it but cold water and the socks, let it do a full cycle (wash/rinse/spin/etc..) pull them out and sit them up to self dry and you're ready for another week.

If I am not mistaken, there is a difference if an actual tankmate dies, like a snail, fish, or shrimp, rather than introducing a food item that might have preservatives in it....

Still with a item sitting frozen in your freezer you will have lost vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients during the freezing process. And depending on the time in the freezer, it might have lost most of its nutritional value. I am telling you, a freshly killed organism that has not been frozen will decay faster than a frozen one. I suggest trying freshwater guppies... If conditions are right, it will decay within a few hours. Also, your holding tank probably is not capaple of decaying organisms as quickly as a full reef tank by the principles that the right type of bacteria for decay is most likely not present in thay system. A reef tank that is constantly breaking down waste will fair better...

Fair enough, I'll go by the fresh water place today and pick up a feeder, unless there's a problem with the preservative of the non marine fish???
