I am using one of the tds pens and im pretty sure the readings are off but i think it can give me an idea of whats going on. I am using a 32g brute can to hold my top of water and i get a tds of around 50 whenever i test it but the water coming out of my ro/di is 4 tds. would a DI cartride inline between my aqua-lifter and my tank help bring down the tds coming into my tank?

If you've ever mixed salt in that 32g brute, you'll get remains from that activity boosting the TDS value of the water in the bucket. This is not an issue. What you want to measure is the TDS coming out of the RO system, and a measurement of around 4 is a great value. Adding a DI system for the water coming out of the RO will certainly help, you'll probably get the water coming out of the system down to a measurement of 0.

The solutes coming from the can aren't likely to be a problem. Not all TDS are created equal.
