green water bad for months i have done upwards of 90% down to 10g daily and it still comes back bad enough to not even see the rocks

wow what are your water parameters?what do you have in your fuge and what do you have in your display for livestock?

I have one you can borrow, but its only a band-aid, the green water will most likely come back the day after you stop using it.

Better to find out what the cause is! :)

Bring a water sample to PA or bring a sample to the next INDMAS meeting, and we can test it and find out whats going on.

that would be great i would have to do it a pa when i come in who do i ask for. this has been a problem for about 5 months i have put new 14,000k hamilton hailed in new skimmer octo hangon, multiple water changes one i even emptied out everything cleaned everything and still the have the problem, the new bulbs helped the old ones were 10,000k, my old skimmer was a excalibur hangon replacing it has helped to water used to go sollid green within 2-3 days to were i could;nt even see the rock work not it takes about 6-8 days but the water does not get as dark. this is my second tank only a 33 long, i never had this problem with my first tank any help would be greatly appreciated

Best to make an appointment so we have time to do the tests, just call the shop and let them know when you want to come in. Either Jeremy, Josh the Livestock guy, or myself can do the tests pretty quick.

But even without the tests, Im betting you just are caught in an endless cycle. Large water changes and scrubbing the rock is most likely just making it worse. That bio needs time to grow, even longer when you have GW that is eating the same nitrogen it needs to get going.

I would probably add some well cured rock to make sure you have some bio working, make sure the Phos resin and carbon were fresh, and the skimmer working well, and step away from the tank. ;)

What kind of livestock is in the tank? Fish? Coral?

Have you tried turning the lights out for a few days (3 or 4) and covering the sides of the tank with a towel? Turning the lights out robs the GW of a necessary nutrient and gives your bio a chance to play catch-up, and your corals will be fine as long as you only do it for 3-4 days at a time. I've done this in the past with great success. It's knocked out green water in 3 freshwater tanks for me, as well as helping me win a massive battle against green hair algae. The GHA took several rounds in a month long period, but I could see it getting weaker each time.

edit - I just saw that you don't have any coral in the tank. In that case I would easily let it go for a week at a time.

with my first tank when the greenhair came all i did was wait for it to get bad then pulled it all out by hand skimmed it all out with a net and it never came back that tank has been running for three years no, but the other is realitivley new only 5-6months never had the greenwater prob before no its getting aggravating

Yeah, killing the lights was going to be my next suggestion, just wanted to make sure you didnt have anything that needed the light first. :)

Adding an airstone during the blackout is a good idea as well, all that GW without light will be respirating off CO2 untill it dies from lack of light it can knock the pH down

Good luck!

does it have to be an airstone right not i have a maixjet1200 running circulation in the tank, thats ok is'nt it
