Did water change and there are tons of specs

You can give the skimmer some time to break-in. (patience grasshopper). My Octopus skimmer discharged a ton of very fine micro bubbles when it was new, once it broke in the skimmer settled in nicely and have not had any micro bubbles since.

How does it break in if I have to turn it off and restart it each day to clean the cup? Or does that not matter? It's so bad - I've never seen anything like this.

Are you supposed to put the black carbon circle cut outs they put in the box over the plastic piece that pushes the water back into the tank that is sending the microbubbles in? I am getting mixed reports both on youtube and in articles/forums that say you should put those over it. But I don't want a flood when I sleep the guys above mentioned could happen?

I pulled the plastic piece a little out of the water that brings in the water into the skimmer. It seemed to slow down the entire system reducing the bubbles a little bit and the cup is slowly getting bubbles to come up through the center, instead of tons of water where it reaches about 2-3 inches before over flow. Did I perhaps have that plastic thing submerged too deep in the water?

Turning the skimmer on/off does not matter nor does cleaning the cup.It needs time to clean itself of manufacturing oils and such and also to build up a slime coat.
Not familiar with this particular skimmer so I have no guidance for you. I did however read some of the cust reviews on this skimmer @ the BRS site, check those out as there are some tips on eliminating micro bubbles and tuning the skimmer.

There are also some good videos on Youtube showing how to set it up.
Just do a google search for octo classic 2000 video.

Dale you are so right! Look at this, in this video they are taking the black carbon things and putting it over the water outake, and on the water intake they raised like i did this morning to bring in less water and raised the cup to reduce the water in the cup!

Thanks!

I had the same skimmer and although it worked great the bubbles and salt creep was a pain in the A**. As far as the black carbon thing you are talking about. It is just a bubble catch for the surface and it is safe to use. Just don't put anything INSIDE the cups - but they can be placed around the exit near the surface.

P.S. Check youtube as mentioned as there are recommendations - but non really work too well I'm afraid. Atleast not in my experience. But the skimmate is amazing!

Your skimmer is simply breaking in. Give it some time and don't worry about the bubbles soo much. Every wave that crashes onto a reef generates billions of bubbles every 20 seconds. Fish don't mind and it does no harm to the tank other than oxygenate it. Once that skimmer gets some nice consistent skimmate going you can take the cannister filter offline. It will have served it's purpose and your skimmer and live rock/sand and weekly maintenance will do the rest. Enjoy
