I think TAAM has gotten a undeserved rep by people that don't take the time to actually check.
I absolutely disagree, they definitley deserve the rep. they have...they worked hard at it
They have a shady past and there is no denying, just search the board for 'rio.' I have had 2 or 3 of the small powerheads break in my tank, one release oil, two just froze and overheated the tank. I have also been shocked. I had a larger one fail in my return when I setup my first sump. Many people have had no luck in dealing with TAAM directly so I never bothered. I went to Maxi-jet and Mag and moved on.
Fastfoward 10 years or so...
They have re-engineered a new stream style powerhead called the Seio. I am glad for them. I have spoken with Kevin (I believe) via email and everything he has told me indicates its a new and better product and will not have any of the problems in the past...that is factastic. Then you search the boards here and look at all the people having problems with startup and impellers. I have heard there customer service has come full circle and I believe it after emailing with Kevin, but the product is still questionable. I dont want a product that I have to beat on the aquarium wall or stick my finger in the hole and startup like a WWI war plane.
I'm not saying Tunze is perfect. Search for it, I know of at least 2 current threads with problems. Both cases they cite excellent service from Tunze. Tunze is also a sponsor and Roger is an active participant on the board.
Seio, search and many people have startup and locking problems, where is TAAM on the board, they aren't. Kevin told me he was a member and pointed me to some 'Seio Club' threads, I asked him twice who he was and he would not reply.
Given a choice between two manufactures that have good customer service, but one has a far more reliable product and the other has a questionably reliable product, I'm going with the product least likely to break....Call it odd, but I also use an Apple computer and will be buying a Toyota truck (my fiance has a Highlander...Im sold to the brand). Customer service is a small but significant part of the decision, product reliability should be the bigger factor.
Having said all this $$$ is also a factor, I would recommend a Seio to anyone who isn't willing or can't put out $$$ for the Tunze, but then again, I am getting a wavebox and two 6060's and still spending less on circulation than I am on lighting and current discussion amongst the 'experts' is the circulation is more important and understressed by hobbyists.
I am now convinced that the days of old style powerheads in aquariums is obsolete and these are the two we have to choose from...for now.
