Difficult and Special Care Species List

Peter Eichler, some astrae snails are alright... some arent. It depends on where they were collected from. The super cheap ones are usually from the baja, and those are the temperate water ones. The more expensive ones are the tropical ones... as they come from farther away. I just avoid the confusion and possiblilty of getting bogus ones by just sticking to nerites (they are awesome) and trochus (very similar to astrae, but much more durable).

Not sure if this was really supposed to be directed at me or Gresham. While there may still be some sources selling Astraea from the Baja area almost every large retailer I come across sells what they claim to be Astraea tecta from the Caribbean. In fact the only time I've seen the really cheap prices for Astaea snails is when they are direct from Caribbean divers.

I've had problems with Nerites before as well. Some of them like to venture out of the aquarium. There are also specialized feeders within the genus and temprate varieties. So... kinda the same problem as Astraea and like Astraea it would be wise for purchasers to be sure what species of Nerites they're getting and/or know where they're from.

Great list, thanks for posting. I do agree that anemones are not easy to keep but if you know what you are doing and have the right setup, it can be done. I bought a small, bleached sebea once and it turned brown (its normal color) and overgrew my aquarium. Lots of feedings, bright lights and good water quality are the key to keeping them. My sebea ended up outgrowing my little 29 gallon aquarium.

This is when I first got it. Two 65w PC over a 29.

I have a Holacanthus tricolor in my reef, do not touch the corals and eats flakes but I supplement his diet with live sponge that I collect. He is really fat and healthy, was very thin at the LFS but it seems that will live some good time :).

You're in the minority. How long have you had him? Please say it's not in the 30g... :(

wich is more agresive the Sohal tang or the Clown Tang?.
Have any had the Achiles tang?

Hard to say for sure since most Clown Tangs die before they're in the tank for long. Regardles of which one is meaner, they're the two meanest tangs IME.

Pound for pound, Id say a red sea purple can get loads meaner.

I've heard stories of them being real jerks but the two I've had and those that I've known in others tanks weren't much meaner than any other Zebrasoma.

Hi, I've got a mated pair of Yellow Striped Maroon Clowns, they are the most peaceful, placid fish in my tank. The female is quite large, and I was well aware of their reputation before I bought them, but they just seem quite content with their anemone and each other. There's always an exception to every rule

SDguy- yes it is, but is only 3''.Like I said in the creole thread I will do a big upgrade soon, there are only 3 fishes, a gramma the angel and the wrasse. I dont thing there should be problem with an angel until the upgrade. For example some people have 5'' maroons in a 20g so why not have a 3' angel for a time?

My True percs are WAY meaner than my purple tang.

He he ...lol... true percs... wow. I know maroon, tomato, clarkii, etc... but not the beloved perculas!!! Wow... them too, huh? Yeah, clownfish are the only fish beyond triggers that will go after my fingers when I put them in the tank. They are gutsy.

Hey, Id like to ask you guys a question on the RS purple tangs (Ill call them RSPTs from here on to make it easier). My experience with them is that they have always been total bastards, but prugs here has a tank with an achillies, a chevron, a sailfin, a Siganus doliatus, and then the RSPT... and its pretty decent size too. Anyways, they get along just fine it seems.

So Im stocking my 125g, and I have a striated tang (relative of the kole), a pac blue, and a yellow. Now, my top choices would be...
1. Achillies: they are my favorite, but very risky. I might get one someday, but it may be too cramped in the 125 now for it (even though my 125g has 10 square feet). Or rather, the recent availability has jacked up the price so much its not worth it IMO.

2. desjardini: if I was to get the safe bet, I would go this route. They are sooo pretty, and pretty nice as far as tangs go. The problem is that they also get LARRRGEEE! I think it might be too much for a 125g, even though there are alot of places that say they are fine for a 55/75g... I dont know...

3. RSPT: This is looking like the top contender right now, but I have concerns. It would be a good match size-wise, but am I pushing it with the yellow tang in there? Should I add another yellow tang first to make sure the other one doesnt get singled out? Ill use the 'mirror' method if I have to (stick a mirror on one side of the tank so the tangs dont know who to go after), for an extended period if need be. But what do you guys think? I dont want to get rid of 'lumpy' my fat & fast growing YT. Is there a way to do this? I can get one for $80.

4. Maybe... I dont know much about them, and have never seen one in person, but how does the chocolate yellow mimic tang look when its older? This might be an easier 'alternate' to one of the above. Acanthurus pyroferus... anyone seen an adult or had one?
