Dinner plate size tang

i think is is mostly hormones that let the fish stop growing
i have also heard roamers about a koi breeder using a long waterfall to brake the hormones up so the fish can get bigger

i do not know how tru this is

A bunch of us were discussing this very phenomenon, specifically why there were none of the huge PBT's you see in nature films developing in aquaria. One idea that came up was the unlimited food supply on the reef and the nature of tangs to ingest so much vegetable material in the wild. Honestly I have seen tangs eating in the wild and my aquarium would be a sewer if my tang ate like that.

Do you think this or is this statement based on some scientific data? T

Cichlids are the same, but I don't think saltwater fish produce an hormones to stop growth. They usually don't have to worry about outgrowing the ocean. :)

Perhaps if you could explain the purpose of your inquiry we could be of more help.

My original question and still is my question, Does anybody have dinner plate size tangs in home aquaria, the "dinner plate" term is thrown around an awfull lot but can never find anybody that has one or has proof of one, no picture=no proof, and maybe something in the picture to show scale. My only purpose is too see a huge tang, theres no "hidden" agenda if thats what your asking, i just want to see these huge tangs!!!!!!!

Correct me if I am wrong but I think what the OP was trying to get at was, has anyone ever had any tangs attain their maximum size in a home aquarium environment. So if you've got a giant tang of any type post some pics and info on it, I know I would like to see it and know how long it is.

I'm in Hawaii right now and just saw a dinner plate size sailfin tang. I know that wasn't really the question, I'm just excited to see reef fish in the wild for the first time!!! ;)

i have doubt even if some person has a dinner plate size tang in his tank,he/she will show it...very few people want to be bashed voluntarily....

Even in the ocean few tangs I have seen are "dinner plate size".
No surprise that in our tanks they are the rare exception.

I am not sure. I have seen some enormous sailin and Naso tangs while snorkling. I realize that the size is distorted under water, but they look pretty darn big to me ;)

I agree it isn't a surprise that they don't reach that size in our tanks, but not because that is a rare size in nature.

Is it the Georgia Aquarium that has the tank full of sailfins and unicorns? Amazing to see ALL of them at such large sizes (I wonder how big they all were when first collected?).

The unicorns I have seen in Hawaii are monsters. They wouldn't fit on a dinner plate.
