Dinner plate size tang

Even in the ocean few tangs I have seen are "dinner plate size".
No surprise that in our tanks they are the rare exception.

False. I have dove in Florida and the Caribbean and snorkeled in Hawaii, the Sea of Cortez, and the Galapagos, and tangs get big! Its crazy seeing large Atlantic Blue tangs that are 12"+ and 2"+ thick, and literally dinner plate sized yellow tangs with their dorsal and anal fins stretched.

I personally think our fish get stunted in our tanks. Whether it is a build up of nutrients or hormones or some other factor. Also I wonder if it could be because fish have to forage for food in the wild, where in our tanks they can be lazy all day especially when they know the feeding schedule.

I saw adults yellows when I snorkled off Maui. They were BIG... I mean BIG!! And the nasos were just ridiculous...the orange scalpels alone were amazingly huge (very noticeable when you view the fish from above because of the way they stick out).

Here is a yellow tang I used to have lost it to a bacterial enfection unfortunatly. Was given to my by a LFS becasue it came in so large they did't think they could sell it. The Asfur it is behind is 7" for reference and it was in a 480g.

We're on the west side of Hawaii. Not much for coral other than Pocilopora but a neat selection of fish. Also saw some very large Nasos and Achilles out there. :)

I assume you are snorkling at Captain Cook's monument and Honaunau :)

My original question and still is my question, Does anybody have dinner plate size tangs in home aquaria, the "dinner plate" term is thrown around an awfull lot but can never find anybody that has one or has proof of one, no picture=no proof, and maybe something in the picture to show scale. My only purpose is too see a huge tang, theres no "hidden" agenda if thats what your asking, i just want to see these huge tangs!!!!!!!

Hmm i didn't mean it in a pure negative connotation (if only i could find my post).

What I don't get is why would anyone's answer be different depending on the "purpose of their inquiry"? There isn't any liability telling him "yes" or "no". It's not even advice that he's asking for and now that he says "i just want to see pictures" it's alright to respond in this thread ?

This was my old dussumieri tang, I dont know what we are considering dinner plate sized but he was 12" long, very fat and when he flared his fins up quite round and plate like :)

This guy was growing fast, I got him in at about 7" and within a year he was 12", some days my wife and I would both be like Wow, he grew overnight. He definitely went through growth spurts.

Wow, that Tang is monstrous. When it turns sideways at the 32 second mark it looks like it's 2" wide.

I'm betting it's an actual fish tank, not just a holding tank. It's too nice and clean and setup.

*EDIT*~dc

We're only on here because we are the very minority of people who care much about the life of the fish in the home aquaria. The very small minority...

Here is a full sized Dussumieri tang in Hawaii...it was around 28" long and about 5-6" from side to side...this thing was ENORMOUS

This picture shows a stingray below it (about 4" below) and the tang was easily 6" longer than the stingray's width...
