dino experiment

Depending on where you live and your indoor CO2 levels, you may have a difficult time maintaining a pH of 8.5 with clear Kalk. on a doser. Your evaporation rate will play into this strategy as well (e.g. the greater your evaporation rate, the more Kalk. you will be able to dose and the better your chances are of maintaining a pH of 8.4 - 8.5). Here is a link to a bunch of articles by Randy Holmes-Farley that might help as you work through the Kalk. dosing and what you are experiencing once you start dosing it.

Ok guys 2 weeks have passed since I started dosing peroxide and to be true I still can not see any significant change. I really don't know why its not working for me maybe I should increase the dose or maybe I have another type of dino, who knows... I'm planning to keep dosing for 2 weeks more to see if something happens.

Ive yet to see any results with peroxide besides higher ORP at night..but I only have my lights on for 4 hours and the dino's are coming back like crazy. Hopefully high Ph can help out

Just wondering. Does anyone think that a UV would help with Dinos?

I am starting to grow them, mostly on my overflows. I would think that the UV would at least kill free floating dinos. Any thoughts?

High pH do kill dinos but here the algae returned as soom as the pH reached it's regular levels. You have to keep your pH at least at 8.6 for 24/7 in order to have any effect on the algae and this is not easy.

I actually had really good luck with my dinos, which you can see here: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=18279039&postcount=5

I did a 3 days lights out, and dosed hydrogen peroxide for about a week. After 3 days of lights out, i only did half of my regular lighting schedule for another 4 days. During that time, i had a filter bag on my drain, which i cleaned out every couple of days and also ran Cuprisorb. I read somewhere that algae is fueled by iron, so I decided why not, and gave Cuprisorb a try.

So I only had my actinics running for 5 hours today...and I filled up my ATO resevoir with kalk. I used 1 tsp per gallon. and then turned on my canopy fan to hopefully increase evaporation. I tried dosing kalk for last night and today but it didnt dose enough to keep up. I'll see how my Ph is tomorrow morning, if its still low, I have an extra 5 gallons of kalk mixed up to dose with a controlled powerhead. My Ph is currently at 8.47

Keep an eye on your alk. Kalk can raise it quickly.

I've been checking it. How would I keep my Ph elevated if my alk gets too high and I cant dose kalk?

Good question. That was the problem I ran into. I fresh air suppply from outside for the skimmer could help. It's not quite warm enough for me to do that yet here.

Another bad news, I lost my first fish today after starting with peroxide. My beautiful firefish is gone... I can not say his lost has something to do with peroxide dosing but..... I'll quit it and keep trying other ways. I'm planning some mg dosing to see if high mg levels will affects the algae. Anyone have already try it?

Sorry to hear for the lose, I havent lost any fish due to dosing peroxide. Try out the mag and see if anything beneficial happens...if Ph doesnt work ill try that next.

Im gunna set up my UV tonight and see if it does anything. I ran it for a couple years then took it off thinking it wasnt doing anything. Maybe it will help

It's a good idea. Report if you see any change.

Will do, I set it up last night and will be continue to trying to keep my Ph elevated and continue to dose peroxide. I set the flow on my UV to really slow, to kill anything that goes through it.

I would not dose the Pickling Lime with a doser, way to slow.
You'll struggle to get the ph up high enough.
Use the lime in your topoff forever. I've done this for years. Your corals will love it !
To battle the dinos:
Mix up a cup of RO and add a teaspoon of lime, just as i suggested on page one of this thread.
Take your turkey baster and add a 1/2 oz and watch the apex ph reading rise immediately. Get it up to 8.6 that way when you come home from work it might have dropped, but only to 8.5, then add more slurry to get it to 8.6 again. Always do this with a baster and do it slowly to keep from going too high. Your results are immediate with the rise in ph. you just have to check it 2 times a day and get it up to 8.6 each time you check.
Keep ph up over 8.5 until all dinos is gone. Then keep it up a few days longer. It's so easy. I do this to treat a 500G system. Dinos was gone in less than 2 weeks.

I have my top dosing the kalk. I just mix up a little thing of water and about a tbs of lime...i mix it up and dump it in my sump

It says my Ph goes about 9 but thats just in the sump..when it all mixes up my ph is around 8.6. But when I come home...my pH is at 8.1. I may have to do a supersaturated level in my ATO to boost the pH more. I only have 1 tsp per gallon, i might do 2 tsp per gallon. My alk stays around 8-9. I've been noticing my coraline algae really take off

i just dump an entire container of kalk in my reservoir, and refill with water as needed. That way it is always saturated. you could also put a powerhead on a timer to mix up every hour, or two hours to keep the ph up while you are not at home.

Yea..I wish there was a pump like my osmolator pump that runs on an outlet..so I can hook it up to my APEX to keep the level up. I'll have to find a small pump that is good at this. Something like the osmolator pump would be perfect.
