dino experiment

I've had good luck raising my ph with kalc. Has anyone else had this work? I would not say i'm dino free, but darn close. I also have not done a water change for about 4 weeks. I'm going to do a 25% to lower nitrates, and see if I'm dino free. Fingers crossed.

I am having some luck with a DIY algae scrubber (and I use both those terms VERY liberally :) ) that I added a couple of weeks ago. It is just an old hob filter with a long piece of that cut-to-size filter floss hanging out of it and a 100w power saver daylight bulb and algae is growing like mad on it. Dino in tank has come to a near halt so far, growing very slowly now.

Keeping fingers crossed that the trend continues but...they are crafty little buggers so who knows.

Seems like my skimmer is having some trouble getting good foam after dosing. Is that what everyone else experienced?

Well, I have to say Ultra Algae X has done a very good job. Lights are ramping back up to 5 hours and no sign of the bubbles! As a bonus, this stuff killed off most of the dreaded bubble algae I have as well. I did 2 day blackout with first dose, and brought back the lights at 4 hours a day after that. I siphoned before 1st dose and after last dose. Nutrients have climbed as I removed carbon and my ZeoVit reactor while dosing . ORP stayed low during treatment at around 300. It has now rebounded back to 330 or so.

How many total doses did you do? I'm about 4 in and can't really notice any difference so far.

The algae x worked for me.I then made the mistake of adding seachem fuel to my tank a few weeks after i thought i was in the clear. This brought back the dinos in full force. The fuel is in the trash and i cant seem to find any more of the algae x as barrier reef is out of stock and cant find anywhere else to buy it.I am dripping kalk at night with a short light period in the day to try and keep it under control until i can find some more-Kieth

Somehow my refugium has become a Dino scrubber. My display is now 100% void of any Dino entirely! Woohoo. I didn't use Algae x or any other product. Just reduced my feeding, stayed diligent with mechanical filtration and manual removal, a long regiment of peroxide dosing (a month) and reduced my water changes. I bought a bottle of bio spira in case my beneficial bacteria were affected but I haven't noticed any ill effects

Except one...my refugium is FILLED with Dino. Can't even see through the glass it's so full. It's completely smothered and killed all of my chaeto and the Texas trash paly colony I had growing in there. What a bummer!!!

Now I am thinking about nuking my refugium, cleaning it spotless, and starting over with fresh chaeto. Could help?? My only problem is the fact that the chaeto dies so it can't remove my nitrates. Haven't tested but the gha indicates there is probably some present.

Or harvest the dinos? Something tells me that if you clean out the fuge they will start again in the main tank. Maybe some sort of plastic mesh that you can get out once a day and scrub a little. Nothing grows faster than dinos so if you can keep them in the fuge and out of the dt you pretty much hit the jackpot. :)

Those were kind of my thoughts. I really miss the nitrate export I got out of my chaeto, but I definitely don't want it growing in my display again. Is Dino any good for nutrient export?

not a clue...looks like you will have to pioneer this and make reefing history!

I did 5 doses as I have 250 gallons net water volume and I purchased one bottle. Things looked much better after the initial dose and 2 day blackout. I am not declaring victory just yet. I noticed a small patch on the sand which I siphoned right out. Wish I would have ordered more as I hear that they are now out of stock.

has anybody else noticed that these outbreaks seem to be seasonal. Looking at my past posts on other sites, i have fought dino's for the last 3 years starting in early march and they dissappear by the end of april.

my tank is in a my game room which receives no outside light. Ph is steady through the winter months because my windows are still closed. I usually get rid of them using the lights out method. i will go 3 days out and maybe a week back on and then 3 days out again and the bloom seems to burn itself out by the end of april.

Other people in the pittsburgh area are noticing the same thing. starting to think it is something that the water company is doing. We got notices that they are gong through their annual chlormaine spike to help clean out the water systems. I am running the chloramine remover (catalytic carbon) on my ro/di (5 stage unit) and it doesn't seem to help. Is there a way even at 0 tds that chloramines can make it through?

anybody else know if there community is using chloramines. it seems that this area only doses them periodically and right after i end with dinos? hmmmmmm

Just an FYI for everyone. Bulk Reef Supply now carries the Ultra Algea X. I got some from Barrier Reefs in Washington State, and they were GREAT to deal with, but they are on the opposite side of the country for me, and it took more than a week to get it. BRS would have been more convienient and faster shipping (for me). Also its cheaper.

I bought a 250ML bottle of Ultra Algea X, but never even opened it. The peroxide worked wonders for me, and I am still dino free after my infestation. Just peroxide, and ramped up my kalk dosing and dino's disapeared overnight.

9 doses in on Ultra Algae X and still have lots on the back glass and some on the rocks. I don't have nearly as much on the front glass and haven't had to clean it in days.

Does everyone stick to the rule of not using it longer than 21 days at a time?

Shutting off the lights for 3 days may be my next step.
