Dip to Use on Smooth Skin SPS?

fraggin corals

New member
I will be receiving some new frags this coming week and will be dipping in Bayer Complete, however, I thought I read that smooth skinned corals (i.e. aculeus, etc.) should not be dipped in Bayer. Am I correct? I cannot get Interceptor as my vet will not prescribe it for my reef. What would be a good dip to use on the smooth acros?

Bayer

Bayer

I've Bayer dipped a bunch of smooth skins with no losses. Not sure what the exact definition of smooth skin is, but I've Bayer dipped Red dragon, pacman, banana lokani, purple monster, Hawkins echinata, icefire echinata. I use 10ml per cup.

I've used bayer dip on smooth skin acros before as well with no loss. Most recently RR Purple dragon Eye

When you say 10ml per cup, is that of the concentrate or from premixed solution. I did 1ml of the concentrate power once and it completely browned or the coral with a little tissue damage. In the end it did survive and is coloring back up, but the process seemed to be a lot more harsh than some say.

I use 10ml of the liquid straight from the bottle per 1 cup of saltwater. I usually dip for 10-15 minutes while using a syringe or turkey baster to blast loose anything that might be hanging on. Then a 30 minute rinse in a Tupperware full of tank water to dilute out any chemical. I think people use lots of different approaches and timing. This is just mine...

I've dipped a my acros, dendros, mushrooms, and caulastrea this way with no losses. Acros often have polyps out during the dip...

I Bayer dip too. I use 5 mL per 250 mL tank water for 5 minutes, but I see people using much more so I'm considering upping my dose.

As all the others above have said, it's tough to beat Bayer. It's gentle on corals (compared to anything else I've tried), and it kills everything that's bad. I do 10 ml per 250ml of tank water for 8-10 minutes.

Does anybody also use some type of pump or air stone in the container while dipping? I have both a small Hydor pump or an air pump/stone I could use if needed.
