dips, baths etc

I was wondering about the usefulness of different dips & baths with different chemicals. Would a one page synopsis be worthy of a sticky? Anyway, I know not a lot about them, but will soon need to know. I hope to have fish this summer.

I remember giving a cowfish a freshwater dip way back when and watching white dots getting blown out of its gills.

F/w dip is mainly useful for detection of internal worms. It does provide the fish with some temp relief but you almost always have to treat in-tank with Prazi next to completely eradicate. I don't think a f/w dip does much, if anything, for Crypto, Velvet, Brook, etc. The thing with a f/w dip is you have to match your tank's pH and temp perfectly. And even then it's still not 100% risk free. Some fish still seem to suffer a bad reaction no matter how careful you are.

Formalin dips are useful for treating Brook and some other external parasites. But like a f/w dip it's only a temp relief measure, as you'll probably have to treat the QT the fish is in to completely eradicate.

How is a FW dip going to affect or detect internal worms?

It causes the worms to fall off the fish from the gills, eyes, under the scales, etc. You can literally watch as they fall off the fish. The f/w also makes the worms turn white so it's best to do it in a glass container so you can see the dead white worms as they settle to the bottom.
