For me, one of the best parts of this hobby is sharing it with my 2 daughters. They have learned more about marine life than most adults ever will. My daughters are 8 and 9. One expressed interest in membership on RC. I assisted her with a membership and showed her how to post a thread. She INDEPENDENTLY assisted her 8 year old sister get another membership. The only advice I gave them was to deep their posts related to the hobby. Both of them were thrilled to have people read their posts and to receive replies. I cant imagine the disappointment they would have to read the replies from some individuals. I guess it is hard for some to understand how such young people could post detailed information about a reef tank. Well.. they did. I did not assist them in any way. I am disappointed that her thread ("I have an alsome tank") was closed. Do individuals need do be of certain age to participate? If so, I apologize for breaking the rules. I think we should be encouraging young people to participate in the hobby, not discouraging them. I believe RC should create a "Young Reefer" section so an 8 or 9 year old can post a thread without being subjected to ridicule. Shame on those individuals. For those who replied to her thread in a kinder fashion, it was a thrill for my daughter and appreciated by me.

Hopefully she will focus on the good, not the bad. It's a great hobby to get them hooked on, and a very nice, safe, and educational way (usually  ) for them to use a web forum.

People are so skeptical these days... And this place can sometiems have a negative vibe anyways...

I bet all the negative comments were from people who are not around children much...

My 4 year old niece has my tank memorized. If anything is missing she points it out right away.... It is kind of scary..

My 11 year old nephew can name every single thing in the tank, livestock and equipment.

I love sharing it with them. I know my nephew will be in this hobby for life, it is in his blood.

I saw that thread and could not believe the direction it took... sorry.

i bet it was closed because it was useless all that was in there were people saying nothing of importance

btw your kids type better then i do

But I think that thread was closed for a good reason, without participation from the OP, it went on with nothing productive going on in the later half.

Be supportive of your kid, tell them how to respond to skeptics rather avoid them, the good thread will go on.

You raise a good point. but I think that is only a small part of the problem.

The logic of the Lounge is just that, people can have a chance to go on and on with nothing relavent to say:) so they don't need to do the same elsewhere on the forum.

Of course the way this thread is going...

No one has picked up on it, but I think there was a good idea mentioned up top...how about adding a Young Reefer's Forum? The key will be if there is enough participation, but its a good idea IMO.

Well it was on a downhill spiral, and was only going to get worse. Hopefully they will not be scared off by some of the responses. Show them where the 'report this post' is too.

I'm with you on this one dmack. This place is filled with close minded people who are too pompous to accept things that are "out of the norm." I see kids every day in the store I work at who can correct other customers on fish type, size, and suitability. High five to you for teaching your kids the ways of the hobby and raising the issue.

i think the young reefers forum would be great... we dont give kids nearly enough credit...
i think the other thing that played into it was the other post about the carp that someone decided was from a bad translation page..

and KUDOS to YOU dmack... for taking the time for your kids...
not enough people do these days...unless it means watching TV with them
:)

I thought it was great that your daughters were excited enough about their tanks to post here.

I am very sorry to hear that the thread your daughter started was closed. She should recieve an apology from the staff here and from the people who took it into an unpleasant direction.

For what its worth, I have also been on the recieving end of undeserved unpleasantness from some other members here.

Its a sad fact that even in a very topical forum like this there are still the problems every other forum has with people behaving in an unnaceptable manner.

There is a wealth of good information available here and just know that at least one of the regulars on the forum will be looking for your daughters future posts and will put in some positive replies in the future.

It's a real shame when a young child has more grace and civility than some of the classless (you know who you are) people that troll this forum.

Thanks for the support. I believe if RC gives the "Young Reefers Section" some consideration some good can come from this.

I feel your pain and wish you only the best. Sometimes on RC people forget that there is a live human being on the other end of the screen. My first thought when I read the initial post was that it was a joke, then I learned better. Kudos to you and your family for taking this hobby that most of us obsess over and making it something to be enjoyed by all.

I am an adviser on a different worldwide board that is one of the first places kids go to for advice and knowledge on fishkeeping. Of the few that are interested in salt (most are freshwater) we have had some very excellent participants that have grown with the hobby. I hope that your interest and your kids interest never wanes.

Sometimes the RC community just needs to take a chill pill, so many are quick to be abusive and lack any social graces...on this forum.

If it is possible, could you get a pic of your daughters tanks? I would love to see what they've put together.

I bet their nicer than my first saltwater tank.

I closed it. And I did so as to not let anyone else insult her. Some were not kind. It might be a lesson for her that not everyone on the internet is nice, and hopefully she will find the kind and caring people here outweigh the skeptics.

I think the "Young Reefers" is an excellent idea! Sure, it may not get the high traffic that some of the other forums may see, but it's a place for the younger kids to start as a launching pad of sorts. The responders will know their audience, and I'm sure there are many very kind people on here who will frequent the page to help teach kids and get answers to their questions. That way, no question will be "dumb" or "obvious".

dmack - for the record, your daughters know far more than I do, and I think it's awesome you have a hobby you can enjoy with your kids!!! I give you lots of credit for that!
