Discovery Show "Tanked"

Yes you are probably right but the problem has to do with people outside the hobby. I will give you a example. My sister happened to catch the show the other night and called to ask me why they could put all these big beautiful fish in after filling the tank up and I couldn’t/wouldn’t consider it for couple months. She also happened to catch the filling it up with tap water. Mainly because they make fun of my RO system and the “special fish water” I use…… I just think they should have a disclaimer at the end or beginning of the show…..

I've seen stuff on ReefCentral way worse than what's on that show maybe they should put a disclaimer on here. I see awful ideas and advice all the time.

There are at times bad advice on rc but NO ONE tells people to use TAP WATER..... Or to put 30 boxes of fish in a brand new tank.
Also reef central is a website not a tv show about the biggest aquarium company in the world?? Like I said TAP WATER ???

Well for myself I would never choose or recommend to anyone to use tap water but in a fish only system when properly dechlorinated and the salt is properly mixed to the correct salinity and PH it poses no threat to the fish but you will be fighting buildup up things like phosphate which will eventually lead to an algae issue. Also while on that topic there is no such thing as cycled water, denitrifying bacteria does not live or reside in the water column only in the filter media such as live rock, live sand, or bio balls and that's where the only hope is for these guys in that maybe they are pre-cycling large amounts of something like bio balls on another system with a high bio load then moving the bio balls to the new system possibly avoiding a cycle but even then if not done very well you could still have a cycle. It's like Ryan said in the fact that I highly doubt these guys got where they are publicly killing large fish populations in there new high dollar systems but again I don't know there exact techniques and neither does anyone else here so that in itself is whats creating the drama here. If anything maybe this will spark people to take a look at there own practices with things like new fish arrivals instead of only floating there new fish shipments then dumping into a tank full of coral with no form of acclimation between salinity or PH and no way of medicating, since they were dumped into a tank full of coral. The ability to quarantine new fish arrivals should be every ones main concern this is the 21st century and there are some good and safe meds for fish out there but can only be utilized if a quarantine tank is available.

Again I would not ever use tap water in my own systems due to the buildup over time of the things that can come in our tap water, but its funny if you read almost every salt bucket including the premium brands it says mix with dechlorinated tap water or purified water. I also think that most large high end hotels have some type of whole hotel water purification systems but it may only be some.

ha this is very true you would know that better than anyone seeing that you have worked at two diffrent ones in town in less than a year. But basically all I'm saying is there is alot of stuff that is put on tv that poeple shouldnt try. The show wasn't made to show people how to keep fish it was made for ratings so it is going to be put together in a way that is intresting to watch. Watching a tank cycle doesn't make for good tv.

^sure did, but im confused as to why that is relavent about giving advice? never once have i suggested bio ball sumps and power compact lamps or sold smoke damaged rock and livestock -_-

just because mcdonalds is the biggest burger company in the world, doesnt mean their food tastes any good.. food for thought

I agree, its hilarious how a channel dedicated to the care and protection of wildlife would portray one of the most exotic hobbies as a "put a hose in a glass box, add salt and fish, and there you go" kind of affair. I would personally prefer a more "steve irwin" kind of approach, and show how things work and details on the animals.

I dont know if you watched the episode last night, but once again the hose in the tank, and i even noticed the bio ball sump in there as well. and then adding 20+ fish plus a gang of stingrays in a tank a few hours old??? about the only thing cool about it was the pump driven feeding tube they made. when somebody spends thousands of $$$ on a tank, im sure they dont want to feel like they're in a jersey shore episode. of course they wont show how many of those fish die, probably never do a follow up on the customer as well. its easier to blame somebody else for your own shortcomings than prevent the issue in the first place :wildone:

and the jukebox tank? 20 damsels, chromis, some firefish, 4 or 5 tangs, no snails or crabs, and all in a tank about 60 gallons or so???? come on now...:uzi:

It's entertainment that sells and not education. There is a place to leave feedback for the show somewhere on the interwebs. It was linked in another thread elsewhere on RC a couple weeks ago. If it's really that big of an issue to you please find this and let them know your true concerns with their practices. I personally will not watch the show because of all the mixed responses. If enough people stop watching it, it will get cancelled. But these people still run a business and their practices whether correct or not will still be displayed. No one I know of would be irresponsible enough to do the things these guys are said to do. It gives the hobby as a whole a black eye.

I think the show is edited together to make for good TV. I really don't think they became the company they are throwing fish in tap water and killing them. The reality of the show is it's more about the drama than the actual tanks. I honestly think the tanks they set up showed a lot of creativity and imagination I've seen far worse examples of poor tank keeping.

I don't think that before the show they had much of a hand in putting in fish. They just build the tanks. I've worked with these guys before. They're aquarium manufacurers. I also feel sorry for the mainenance guys that come in after the build and have to clean up their mess and also have the joy of keeping that acrylic tank clean.

Has any body heard of Right Now bacteria. A guy named Snake from California sells it. i think the company is HTL? He claims that you can do this with his product.

I officially have lost interest in this show, i gave it 3 tries.

I officially have lost interest in this thread, it started out ok, but In My Opinion there is a couple of people that have personal agendas and look for ways to introduce them into most threads, that is sad.

My apology in advance to everyone, just something that has been rubbing me wrong for awhile.

To those 2 people:
I get it, we get it !!!!! You dont like the local club officers, and you dont like aqo.
How about we try to find a productive ways to promote the hobby that we like and the business you are in. Besides i think it was both of those that helped to get you into the business in the first place.

Hagen power glow LOL….. guess I should be laughing at myself because I took that bait…… Took only a month to figure out that was a mistake… lesson learned. Just like everything else with this hobby, research, research, research, and when you think you have made up your mind research some more then buy.

lol !! Maybe help show me how not to run a business! I have been in business for myself since I was 18 and have done it all myself and started in this hobby in 2003 with no help from anyone but my loving wife if anyone helped anyone it was me providing hours of free labor and equipment such as my truck and trailor YEAR after YEAR for nothing in return from your beloved AQO. Go coach your kiddies and not me cause your being to hypocritical here its ok for Travis and Scott to make little stabs at premier (hagen lighting jokes because we all know how top of the line wavepoint fixtures are) but if anyone even thinks its a possible jab at oddballs here comes the calvary as usual no one here mentioned AQO or any officers till now in this thread so not even exactly sure what your talking about. Why don't you guys just go ahead and change the name to Oddballs Marine Aquarium Society it will fit better with your practices. Nice way to completely de-rail a somewhat decent thread since you decided you were over it and felt like calling people out.

And I don't know you at all. So I'm not sure how or why you would claim to know anything about how or who would be involved with me starting my business but obviously you get one sided information and preach it like it's the Gospel.

i dont know if you noticed, but they had an acrylic fish system in the back of their shop, and the box they brought in looked just like it does when it comes straight from the airport.

WOW, Jerrod, your at it again. I remember all the help you gave us and am thankful for it, even today after you badmouth us. HOWEVER, I guess you forgot about all the gas money, free hotel rooms, products sold at cost, dinners and COUNTLESS amounts of corals you took from us in exchange for the work you did. Oh and I forgot about the maintenance accounts we GAVE to you to help feed your family when your other business was failing. I'm just saying. Maybe you should honestly reflect on the past and tell it like it is.
