Those things are way cool! (I like bugs and creepy crawlies :D ).

Ditto that. I always thought these guys were kinda cool. Its the red ones with fewer legs that I think are not so cool.

In high school, my best friend slept in the basement of his house. One morning after waking up, he went to go to the bathroom. When he leaned over to wash his hands, a centipede fell out of his hair! He ran around the house screaming like a woman. He pretty much slept on the couch upstairs after that.

What's really fun is when you step on one and you get an oblong grey blob in the middle of all those twitching, wiggling legs. Eewwww....!!! :D

i got two of them in my downstairs.

up in nj they are somewhat common i guess.

and yes very juicy when you step on them. i'll agree with the others, these ones just bug me. not only that, but ive slept in places where these have been found. makes me sick thinking about if i ate one during my sleep. hey you eat 7 spiders on avg a year...whose to say i had 6 with this one as dessert?

edit: the above makes it sound like i have two of them as pets. i meant to say i "had" :D

So that's what those are - we always called them alien bugs. Those suckers can move! They have the coolest leg movement, it looks so fluid!!!!

The wife absolutely hates them, so I am definitely going to look into the whole powdering the foundation idea!

I have seen several before, once and a while, i haven't seen one in a while though, i saw one move across the floor before fast little things, scared the s**t out of me if you know what i mean.

There's a lot of them in my house, particularily one in the main bathroom that's about 3" long.

We don't kill them though even though they give me the creeps terribly.

They are really good at getting into the baseboards and eating dust mites and all kinds of other critters that I'd prefer not to have in my house. This place is 100 years old, so it's been a hassle keeping the spiders and such away.

Rue - if they are not insects what are they?

I'm not Rue... But if I may... They are arachnids I believe. In the same family as spiders, scorpions, millipedes, and the like. I've heard they hunt spiders as well as insects... I still have a hard time letting them go. So if I see one, I step on it...

We call them "ugly bugs". I like snakes and even bats but there is just something about the way these things move thats creepy.

Nope, not arachnids either.

They belong to class Chilopoda - centipedes...they have 1 pair of walking legs per body segment.

Millipedes belong to class Diplopoda ...they have 2 pairs of walking legs per body segment.

Insects - have 6 legs (3 pair)

Arachnids - have 8 legs (4 pair).

Centipedes are venomous, and are predators. Some of the very large varieties can cause a certain amount of discomfort if you happen to be bitten by them, but not a cause for concern.

Mostly they can be considered beneficial to have, since they'll be hunting down and dining on other 'bugs' hanging around your basement.

But none of the other bugs in the basement are as creepy as these.

must be an east coast thing. never heard of them before. :) thank goodness too i think i would freak if one ran across me at night.
