Display, frag, sump, fuge all in 1 setup

f you use a filter sock I don't think a dirty bottom will be an issue. I am sure you'll want to have a PH in the frag section.

I hate filter socks, I used to use it but then I have a bunch of pods stuck in there.

Seems a bit like defeating your purpose. I assumed you wanted to use a standard 55 to help save money, adding a small custom tank like that could cost more than the 55.

It's not the cost factor, it's just the idea of having an all in one system. I not only want people to have their jaw drop when looking at my tank. I want them to have a double "wow" when I show them under the stand as well.

There you do thinking again. I was only thinking about reverse lighting the 'fuge area for O2 and PH reasons but There's no reason you can't reverse light the whole thing. I suspect that the heat of a single 175 over that much water can be managed with ventilation and a fan pretty easily.

Cool throw some more ideas at me. I like to brain storm before I put together a project. Especially this is going to be final. I don't think I can do any better than Starfire. It's the dream size tank for me already unless I have a bigger place.

I just looked at marc's site and noticed that he has a design for a sump he built with frag section and 'fuge and it's 52 gallons.

That's exactly how my 36" sump is right now, works like a charm, I might even consider doing that again if I decide against the frag section.

I was not implying he should remove the "underflow" or baffle; I simply was saying the way the set up is now if there was one thing that fell in the way it would not overflow into the return, but attempt to overflow into the drain inlet and then all over his home. There is no reason why he couldn't pull down the two interior sides of the return by 1 cm or half an inch. Would not take him any more time, thought, or materials and would just be an additional safe guard. I do not know about you, but when I am pumping salt water in my house I take all precautions to make sure I don't pump it away from my animals and onto the floor. I have read enough horror stories online.

The material for the partitions came from tap plastics. I can't remember exactly what I paid for them. I believe they are 1/8th inch. There is no pressure on them which so the silicone if plenty strong enough. I used black so that I could light the different partitions differently if I ever decide to. It also keeps the mantis from seeing too much good food on the other side of the tank.

I see what you are thinking about the underflow now. The problem is that the overflow out of the drain needs to be lower. It all depends on the volume of the tanks overflow. The overflow needs to be low enough that the entire volume of the overflow can drain into the sump and not overfill the sump. That will prevent the sump from getting overfilled if the underflow into the return is blocked. I if the underflow is blocked all the water in the main tank drain will come down to the sump and just sit there being moved by any powerhead you have in the SPS area. That being said I can't imagine the underflow being completely blocked anyway.
