Sad news during my travels in the North of the Dominican Rep where several company's collect fish for the US market and England a diver died.Just plain greed on the part of a US and British company. It starts like this tow very large company's one in LA in England make a deal with a guy in the Dominican rep. Exclusive shipping . The usual MO of these guys is to "lock" up suppliers . Well they did and ordered 200 blackcap bass for a week sale. Well being in the business 35 years + I know thats going to kill someone. Black caps start at 90 + feet 30 meters really start appearing in numbers 120 ft well they were offered an extra 0.50 cents each to complete the order in one day. Now in Haiti most shippers will only send you 45 a week so the divers wont kill themselves collecting more and i never order more knowing that and had explained it to the guy in LA that you just cant get more when i dealt with him. To place an order for 200 is just asking for disaster. None of these divers are certified. When i confronted the guy in LA after the death of a Haitian they were using and asked for a small amount of money for the guys wife and 4 kids i was rebuffed rather nastily is it really worth a life to put a deep water fish on sale?

Anyway one survived and is in good shape today . This happened several years ago and i just got free to post this. One diver was from Haiti and one was Dominican. I really dont want to call for a ban on Black caps as they are collected in Haiti, safely . It works like this . On saturday the first day of diving for the week the divers go down and collect 40/50 fish then tie them off at 30 feet . then the rest of the week only reef diving is allowed 40 to 60 feet inverts ect. cant kill themselves that way. now both of these company's should have known better sad just sad

So basically what your saying is instead of telling the buyer it can't be done, the workers(divers) are killing themselves to get a big payday?

This is new, and something us in the hobby should be concerned with how? Stuff like this happens all day every day, its called business. Look at the amount of people that kill themselves every day that work in an apple plant.

sorry about the ramble in the post ..This is what happens when inexperienced people get in a business. The Two Wholesalers should have known better.
You just have to watch who you do business with . I am happy to say that the black cap diving in The DR has slowed down as the divers wise up.I just had dinner with the Dominican last night that was bent . He seems fine. Strange how one dies and the other walks away. Just sad . more and more Dominican are moving over the border into Haiti to collect as prices are lower. some of the fun things company's do in the DR. give out Hookah rigs with regular motor oil in the compressor. Talk about black lung. long hoses for deep diving. No back up if the motor dies or runs out of gas . You get about 3 breaths to come up.

oh the 2 company's are Quality marine and TMC in England. See how long this post lasts before they scream . I confronted the owner of Qm to at least drop some cash on the Wife and kids of the Haitian but no go

Absolutely..
Fault lies in the diver company not those that contracted them..
Dive company told US/UK customers that they could get "X" fish... In process diver dies... Dive company should have been more responsible for their own and not put their lives at risk for a contract..

Who's the greedy one again?

I don't think anyone does. But I do find it amusing he thinks QM will be "screaming" when they find out about this rambling post from some anonymous guy on the internet.
