Recovering Detritophobe
Hello,

I just ordered (among other things) the C. rostratus from the Diver's Den for delivery this Saturday. Order Number A2597895. I was wondering if you could tell me what he is currently eating at your facility.

Thanks very much,
Mike

Dear Mike,

Thank you for contacting us with your question on this amazing fish. We feed them Mysis, Brine and Spirulina soaked in Selcon. Every other day we add some Garlic Xtreme to it as well. Your order is scheduled to ship this Friday for Saturday delivery. As soon as your order ships you will receive an email confirmation with your tracking number.

We hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions please contact us. We hope you enjoy your new addition to your aquarium.

He has not eaten yet, I have tried twice daily for sat, sun, mon. I have not done feedings today (tues) yet. I have tried frozen bloodworms, mysis, artemia, and mini-krill (san francisco bay brand "plankton"), soaked in selcon and/or garlic extreme. Yesterday I saw him pick at the rocks a few times.

Mike,

We are sorry to hear that your fish is still not eating regularly during feeding times. You may want to try holding back on feedings in order to entice the fish to eat. The Copperband Butterflyfish is a difficult fish to feed and may graze on the live rock in the aquarium.

According to Scott W. Michael, located on pages 191 & 192 of his book Angelfishes & Butterflyfishes, “Some settle into their new homes within several days and begin eating fresh and frozen foods, while others may refuse to feed, requiring live foods, like live clams or black mussels that have had their shells broken open, or sessile-invertebrate-encrusted live rock.”

We ask that you continue to monitor the fish for a sunken abdomen or other signs of poor nutrition. If you have questions please feel free to contact us.

Thanks, I went and bought a bag of frozen clams and mussels, and I rubberbanded some into empty half shells. He was hesitant, but eventually picked at it a bit. I guess I will keep doing this until he takes other foods. I don't want him getting too used to eating clams...

He's still not interested at all at any food in the water column. As I said in my last post, he picked at some frozen mussel/clam, but doesnt really seem to be eating much of it.

He is starting to look a little pinched between his side fins and his underside fins. I'm worried :(

LobsterOfJustice,

We would recommend continuing to offer a variety of foods to entice your Copperband Butterflyfish to eat. These fish do like to pick at things so rubber banding the food to a rock or shell is a good tactic to use. Live Brine shrimp might also work for feeding. Also make sure that there is no other fish that might be chasing the Butterflyfish away from the food source. Please keep us updated to the health of your fish.
