Divers Den selling caulerpa from hell !

Tons of people love it and it's not like the online retailers are above selling you things that are potentially disastrous. They would happily sell hair algae and bubble algae if there's a market for it.

So many advocate staying away from caulerpa these days, and w/ all of the issues we already face restricting or potentially restricting import of many of our animals, I don't understand why they are selling it either.
Anyone that has it enter their display would most likely regret ever having it at all.
Most caulerpa is illegal to sell here in Cali for good reason.

there r many kind of caulerpa. not all kinds r bad. i hv the one listed by dr site, and its been great in my reef. as long as u cut them every 3-4 weeks, they dont really get out of control.

This is actually very popular in tanks here in Japan. People here tend use this or other caulerpa in their tanks rather than chaeto. Chaeto is hard to find here, while caulerpa is native to the region. I personally have used it for years and have never had an issue. However, I also use chaeto and an algae scrubber (and dose a little vodka), so there might not even be enough nutrients to go around in my case.

I moved some greens to my display (caulerpa and chaeto), but caulerpa doesn't seem to grow much under the bright LEDs of the display tank. The chaeto grows faster in my display than it does in my fuge.

edit: oops, grammar

I use it in my sump, doesn't grow at all that I notice really. I hardly ever prune it. Tried putting some in my dt, but the emerald I had at the time kept eating it up.

tangs destroy mine. If it wasn't in the sump they would eat it all in a day or so and i've got enough to fill a microwave. I throw it away weekly. I just toss it in the river......

JUST KIDDING

It's very attractive, IMO, in large predator tanks like with lionfish.

Just because they sell something doesn't mean you have to buy it. No ones holding a gun to your head saying "buy this or else"

I had grape caulerpa once but it slowly died away. When it was growing fast I would but some in the main tank and the angels and tanks went on a feeding frenzy with it. If you have a large tank with seaweed eating large fish I highly recommend this caulerpa as you'll never have to worry about some getting in your display tank and taking over.

Over here it is cultivated in large farms and sold as a delicacy (somewhat) and people cook with it. I ordered a pack and we atewhat we didn't put in the sump, was most awesome. :)

It is illegal in some areas. It is an absolute pest in the tank. I would urge people to use cheato or most anything else, and do not discharge tank water anywhere it can reach a body of salt water. It's become a plague in the Med.

I do love my umibudo (sea grapes) and all (including umibudo ice cream), but I wouldn't dare harvest it from my own tank. Have you eaten any raised from your tank? One of my girlfriends was saying we should. (My mom also offered to eat any mantis shrimps I catch, but I'd hope they'd be smaller than eating size by the time I found them!)

What I'd really love to raise is mozuku (delicious~), but it looks like hair algae.

I've never met anyone here in Japan who thought it was a pest in tanks though. For me, it just never seems to grow fast enough.
