Nice job steven. I have a watchman in my 10g. Thier a cool fish. I was also looking for a pistol shrimp but i cant find one at my lfs. how much water do you say is in the main display?? and holy crap that is a big snail!

Steve

yes they are
i have watched them at my LFS
same here but my LFS is cool and they take special orders
pretty much whatever you want with no extra charge

i would say 8 to 9 gallons in the main display
the internal filter doesnt take up much room at all
and it works great

haha yes it is big
he will be a good cleaner

well i took out the wall and added another piece of LR
gives me more viewing room and more filtration

i added a HOB
with some carbon and a bunch of sponge to act as mostly a
biological filter
and a little bit of water movement

heres a pic

looks kind of dim in the picture
but it is brighter than that

i still have my 4 hermits
and my snail died :(
that thing really stunk

today i might go get a fish
i was thinking a yellow clown goby

tell me what you guys think

thanks
Steven.

looks good, but why did you take out the internal filter? what made your snail die, i'd make sure the levels are safe before adding fish.

when you changed the filter, did you run the new filter on the tank a few weeks before you took out the old media? if not, your snail probably died from a mini cycle.

Chances are the hermits killed the snail. as fobex said, you'll deffinatly want to check the parameters just to be sure

the snail died for an unknown reason,
my parameters were perfect

flobex, the internal filter was falling apart
it worked great, but was just falling apart
i put the old media in the new filter
let it settle for a few days then added a piece of LR today
and now at the end of the day i am adding my new yellow clown goby

next i am going to add a black and white percula, shrimp, MAYBE a firefish, snails, corals
and if i need it more hermits

Looks good, I like the rock ledge look.

I would guess, and this is just a guess, that the snail died because of lack of food. I could have missed it but didn't see you mention supplementing the snail with food, and the tank looks to be pretty algae free, thus I would guess he had nothing to eat. I'd wait a little bit and get some algae growth then try the turbo again :) It could also be, like others have mentioned, a case of hermit murder... :eek1: OR the mini cycle that was also mentioned. Anyway will never really know why that MONDO snail really did die.

Also I would keep the fish to a minimum. Less waste in the tank will help you keep the parameters stable. I'd say go with the goby and a percula. As far as the firefish, they are cool but you will need a lid over all the top. They love jumping to their death. But they do look awesome!

Thats enough from me, good luck and I'll be watching your progress. :)

more than likely thats what happened
bcause i didnt supplement with food
and it died when the in-tank filter was in
so it wasnt the mini-cycle
it could have been the hermits but i doubt it
i left for a week and came back to it dead
and there was no alge when i left sooo
idk
i will try back when i get some more alge growth

and i won't add the fish at the same time
i probably wont add another fish for a while

i have owned a firefish before
they are pretty neat looking and i do have a top there is no possible way for it to escape
because there are no openings

Nice looking Nano.

Thanks for posting the pics. You've given me the inspiration to do something similar.

Going to try and create my perfect 12g Nano using a lot of the redundant kit lying around in my store room.

Might even start another thread.

MDP, i am glad i inspiered someone
i got a little discouraged during this project
but when everything came together and started looking nice
i really gained my confidence back

i hope you enjoy your project :)

Thanks Steven.

I especially liked your partitioned tank. I am planning a similar approach. This one will go in a very visible place in the house so I have to get it right and looking very neat. Unfortunately the major gripe my wife has with my tanks are "all those ugly wires and big powerheads". I now plan to build a tank so that none of these will be visible from the front.

I see your first filter "fell to bits". Damn shame that, it looked very neat. Given that I want to do something similar, could you elaborate on what went wrong/what you would have done differently in retrospect? I'm sure it would be a real help.

Any input greatly appreciated.

Promise to share my build and pics. Aiming to start this weekend.

well matt when mine fell apart it happened fairly slowly, i beleive it was the glue that i used because it was not aquarium glue.
i could not get any so i had to make use of what i had, i just picked up some household silicon from hopedepot and made sure it had no mold inhibitors. i glued it let it sit for the night and until the morning.
i think it was either the glue, or my impatience. i have snese them learned better.

this is a fairly cheap and affordable project if it is on a small scale.
i order most of everything off of www.drsfostersmith.com
great products for a great price.

first what i would do from what i have learned after this project is get the return pump and size the housing according to that, that way you will have the most viewing room as possible.

matt just let me know if you have any more questions and i will answer them happily :)

and i would much like to see either you pics or thread on this project

good luck!

the light looked a little dull im my tank

Thanks Steven. I'm sure I'll have a few more questions.

Moving that lighting round really worked a treat. Huge difference.
