DIY Kalk Reactor

we will use acrylic for the whole reactor.:)if were going to do a few i can do some mill work to make the just like a geo.a fellow reeferm mtold me i can measure his geo and copy it.

Hmmm...Let me know the what you think the cost per unit for parts will be. I want to build one for kalk, and 3 more slightly modified for phosban, carbon, and ozone.

That is was what I was thinking. I'd just purchased a phosban reactor for around 30 -35 dollars. It is such a simple setup and I need another one for my 65G. I don't think we'll have any problems with leftovers :D.

Wow, didn't realize this was going to be such a big hit... anyway good luck you guys and have fun.

checkinhawk, I selected sch 40 PVC for a couple of reasons, first it was easier to get my hands on then acyclic, second my reactor has to hold about 60 to 70 lbs water pressure, it is in line with my RO/DI top-off system, a line comes from my RO/DI unit, into the bottom of the reactor, out the top and into a float valve in the sump, when the pressure reaches 70 lbs the RO/DI shuts off and I wasn't sure what it would take in acrylic to handle this pressure plus wasn't sure how thick the acrylic would be. The pvc is thick enough to tap and thread a valve into to keep it leak free.

Well, here is an update.... I did not get enough glue on the end cap and I can not get it to stop leaking under presure. Everything else is fine accept the @#$%$# end cap so it looks like I will have to start over. Costly error on my part and a minor setback unless someone out there knows how I can get this end cap to quit leaking under about 70 psi.....

If you have access to a vacuum pump, put a fitting into the unit and hook the vacuum pump to it and put some (lots of) pvc glue where the leak is and see if it will suck the glue in. If it does, vent the vacuum after it sucks in some glue and let it cure.

i can get the acrylic tube 6" for $8/foot.it comes in 6ft lenghts so $48 for the stick.im going to get one on monday.let me know if you want some of it.warnberg bring me the piece i can weld it for you,it wont leak after that.

with a plastics welder, that is what i do.it is just a glorified hot glue gun.the acrylic will hold that pressure just fine,it is 6"od and m5 1/4"id so 3/8"thick wall.70 psi no problem  the only reason i dont want to use pvc is cause i want to see the media.they do make clear pvc,it is kinda blueish colored not true clear.

That's not bad at all, I'd like 3 feet if it works out as far as splitting up the length for everyone. This way I can build a Phosphate reactor, Carbon and the Kalk - sound good? If I need to purchase more to even it out - just let me know!

I'm in!!! If possible I would like four 24 inch pieces of the 6 inch. Let me know if I need to bring anything other than $$$. Do you have the flat stuff also???

if we are going to do this,i need to know how many feet everyone needs.i think they only had 4 lenghts in stock so thats 24ft.i only need enough for a calcium reactor.i can also get the flat sheet.let me try to get with the guy with the geo,so i can find out what materials we will need.

reefartist you know what i use as a phosphate reactor?a brine shrimp hatcher.i hooked it up to a baby powerhead(70gph)threw in a pack of phosorb and zero phosphates on salifert test kit.
