DIY LEDs - The write-up

Are you guys doing anything to cover the soldered joints, I might have heard about oxidation issues?

There are different types of coatings available that people do to circuit boards to protect them from corrosion and they come in different forms like aerosol spray, liquid, for dipping, also for brush on and in a pen. I think we'd probably have to stick with the pens or the brush on type because we don't need to coat anything but the solder joints. I'm not sure what type of coating would be needed and there are many types for different applications, levels of protection, etc, but probably just having something is better than nothing. google 'conformal coating' ;)

We've talked about online suppliers, home depot, etc. for channel and other extruded aluminum shapes. I was at my local middle-of-nowhere-podunk True Value hardware store over the weekend buying screws and noticed that they have 6' long 2" x 2" x 1/8" L for like $11. That's the cheapest I've seen! As we were discussing a few pages back, IMHO it's worth being creative when it comes to heatsinks, as long as you can test/verify effectiveness in your design.

I got 6 4 foot sections of 1/8th thick 2"x1" tall channel from speedy metals online for 69 shipped. Couldn't find it local.

But pricier than Cutter by about a buck each.

And they don't list or let you pick a color bin. The order code they give covers a huge range.

Plus their order page says this:

Combine with Mean Well LPC-60-1050 driver for maximum efficiency!

Which is completely wrong (that's a 1,050mA driver which will drive the XP-G correctly and within spec, but certainly nowhere near it's maximal efficiency.)

No offense to rapidled but those are my thoughts.

Grim,

"Cost me 8.27 from LED supply, not a bad deal from rapid. "

You should have checked with me I just did an order last week & got more than 50, so $7.61.

They have optics at ledsupply that fit on the XP-Gs, but I havent done the experimentation yet. Maybe tonight if I get my frag tank plumbed in.

Next step is an XP-G pendant for the frag tank.

I got the following from Cutter:

XPGs for US$5.46
XPEs for US$4.58
Opics for US$1.19

I paid US$ 19.90 shipping and something like US$ 13 in FX conversion on my CC (that FX could have been less had I used prepaid PayPal).

The MCPCBs were 10mm square that accepted the following optics: [link to be provided shortly]

Oh, and I got my Meanwells for $27 from cdiweb.com

HeneryH,
are these volume discounted prices you are posting?
-R

XPG is 26-100 (AUD$ 0.74 discount shown in above price)
XPE is 50-100 (AUD$ 0.95 discount shown in above price, not sure if there is a lower break point)
Optics had no discount

I just finally got my final plan together and ordered today. I got a bunch of my stuff from Nano Tuners cause they treated a local right when he had an issue with their LED system on his retro, they had good prices on the meanwells too. They didn't have the PG's or warm whites I wanted so..... I like to reward people who do right.

Maybe if this takes off one of use should consider becoming a Cree distributor :wavehand:

Most of us have heard about Sanjay's expertise with MH bulbs. Grim Reefer is revered by many as the ultimate T5 guru (although it appears he is moving on). If you had to take a vote, who would you say would be the current top expert in marine L.E.D. lighting ?

I'd say there are a few here. Mostly very active in this thread with lots of info and knowledge. At least four of them:
der_wille_zur_macht
Stugray
Santoki
Evil

I would go with Der or Stu with the amount of technical background that you can pull from them with just one simple question that ends up in like several paragraphs of knowledge, pictures and schematics between the two of them, lol. Priceless!!
